China

No matter Olympic Games or Football World Cup, each magnificent sports event can arouse people’s enthusiasm and passion for their motherlands, reinforcing solidarity in the nation. The holding of the popular events shows the national comprehensive strength, and everyone is willing to do their bit for the event, which has been proved through Beijing Olympic Games famous for the most volunteers. In Aug. 2008, the capital of China was just like a united nation, where athletes and fans from all over the world gathered. The audiences spared no efforts to encourage the sportsmen in competition, with applause echoing in the air. At that moment, the patriotic emotions were released. The audience pours their love for the homeland by supporting the athletes. I trust everyone is moved when hearing the anthem and watching the national flag rising. On the other hand, the role of big events in easing international tensions, in my view, is not as effective as that in calling patriotism. The tragedy on Munich Olympic Games is unforgettable. Some Palestinian terrorists slipped into the Olympic Village, hijacked 9 Israeli sportsmen and killed them later. Mr. Coubertin wished the Olympics to bring peace to the world temporarily, but the Olympic spirits did not persuade terrorists to give up the atrocity. Since 1972, it has been costing host countries more and more financial supports for the safeguard. As for the football games, it can be said that the violence between different groups of fans has been a part of the game. Therefore, I think the international sporting occasions are significant in converging patriotism but it cannot relieve international tensions. More seriously, terrorists have regarded the sports events as their targets. The field is not just a playground for competition but has been endowed with complex emotions, affection and hatred, and friendship and revenge. More efforts should be paid to realize a short period when all people could just enjoy the sports games and forget the violence and hatred.
