“as we know from hundreds of hours of celluloid, new york is inhabited mostly by prostitutes, dodgy cops and serial killers. oh, and Meg Ryan, who is an english teacher with a predilection for bad poetry on trains and risque sx in Jane Campion’s psycho-sexual thriller. It’s all a bit predictable: severed heads keep turning up and meg can’t decide whether it’s her psycho ex-boyfriend, the prospective boyfriend who hands in assignments written in blood or the dodgy cop she’s bonking. There’s lots of vaguely un-PC sx and Meg fakes another orga*m but these are familiar rain-soaked streets, even if ther are shot from a woman’s point of view.”
