The ten-nil rout almost sent them through as runners up in the group, but they also required Qatar to lose in Iran, a match which was drawn. Indonesia had already been eliminated, and they fielded a relatively inexperienced team, but the heavy defeat was still unexpected.

I think the first word should read route, which means course or track. “Runners up” are people who come in after the winner in a race. “Eliminated” means taken away, and “unexpected” means not predicted or expected to happen. Smile

Hi! I’m not exactly sure what that phrase means in this context. I think it means that they ended up with a difficult competitor. “Draw” means be assigned and “match” means competition.
