As part of Stare Week, this movie lesson deals with the difficulty of having to stare at someone else’s success. Yes, sometimes people very close to you make it big. Although, we want to be happy for them, sometimes it’s hard. This week’s movie lesson is all about the envy caused by having to stare at someone else’s success every day.

Steph: I saw this movie last week, where, um, a friendship was ruined because one friend started doing really well and the other one got jealous.
Derek: Hmm. That sounds pretty interesting. Who was in it?
Steph: Um, that actor Jack Black. It was a movie called Envy.
Derek: Really? Was it a funny movie?
Steph: It was pretty funny. Um, I liked it. But it was also pretty serious, you know? Because these guys were really best friends. And they lived right next door to each other. And one started doing very well and the other got just so envious.
Derek: Envious. Yeah. I think I’ve seen that several times with some other friends that get jealous of each other when one gets really successful.
Steph: Totally. Yeah. Especially, ya know, when it comes to money or having, ya know, somehow, a prettier family or something like that. Or when they live right next door to you and you have to stare at it every day.
Derek: Yeah. I guess in your face success is a little bit, uh, hard to deal with.
Steph: Totally. Well let’s just hope that our neighbors don’t start doing really well. We’ll just get jealous of them.
Derek: Exactly.

Has this ever happened to you? Have any of your friends or neighbors gotten really successful and left you in the dust? Or vice versa? It’s not logical. You would want people to be happy for you, right? Sometimes it’s really hard to control our emotions, I think. Oh well. I guess that’s life!
