Joe: Last night I was watching “VH1: Behind the Music” and they did a whole “Behind the Music” section on Weird Al Yankovic.
Nedra: Oh yeah? What did they have to say about him?
Joe: They were talking about how he has become very famous by doing parodies of famous musicians and their real famous songs.
Nedra: Uh huh. Oh like, uh, Michael Jackson?
Joe: Right. Yeah like Michael Jackson. In fact, they showed the video that he did called ‘Eat It’ where he did a parody, um, of Michael Jackson’s song ‘Beat It’.
Nedra: Oh yeah. I remember watching that when I was a little kid. It was pretty funny. And it reminded me of the one, um, he did called, um, “I’m Fat,” but it was really the “I’m Bad” one by Michael Jackson.
Joe: Right! (Laughs) At first I got those confused.
Nedra: They’re pretty similar because uh he’s always eating in both of them.
Joe: Right. Right. Yeah that Weird Al Yankovic he’s a real… he’s a real kick in the pants.
Nedra: Yeah. He he pulls off some pretty good uh spoofs there with the music.

Discussion
Weird Al has done quite a few parodies of popular songs. He’s very talented. He writes his own lyrics to fit existing songs. One of the best examples is his version of the song “American Pie” by Don McLean. He uses the song to tell the story of Star Wars: Episode One. It’s really funny.
Do you like Weird Al? What do you think of song parodies? Come to the MUSIC MIX message board and let us know!
We’ll be back next week with another interesting conversation about music!
