A few weeks ago, I bought a new CD called Room for Squares by John Mayer. I brought it back to the office and played it for everyone. We’re still listening to it almost every day. It’s a great CD.
John Mayer is a 23 year-old singer-songwriter from Connecticut. He sings with a smoky, bluesy voice that’s similar to Dave Matthew’s. His emotional, earnest songs show his genuine passion for music. He started playing guitar at age 13, and within two years he was performing at local blues bars and stunning audiences with his playing.

John Mayer’s most popular song is “No Such Thing.” It’s a fun song about what it’s like to be a young person who is growing up. John sings:
“Welcome to the real world”, she said to me
Condescendingly
Take a seat
Take your life
Plot it out in black and white
Well I never lived the dreams of the prom kings
And the drama queens
I’d like to think the best of me
Is still hiding
Up my sleeve
“No Such Thing” is a hopeful song. John is saying that he knows life will be difficult, but he’s excited about living it.

Discussion
John Mayer is filled with energy and enthusiasm. He loves music, and he loves to perform for people. “When you hear a great song, you trace it back to who the singer is,” Mayer says. “When you can offer people that piece of you, that’s what keeps them listening to you.”
I strongly suggest that you get John Mayer’s album. You won’t be disappointed. Listening to it will help you understand English and will also give you some idea of what it’s like to be a young person in America.
