Liz Phair is a unique person and a unique singer-songwriter. From Chicago, the 36 year-old musician has been making amazing music since the early 90’s. Her first album, Exile in Guyville, is one of the most successful independent albums ever.
Liz’s newest album, titled Liz Phair, features a song that’s a perfect example of Liz’s style. “Why Can’t I?” is a song she wrote about cheating on her boyfriend. Read on to learn more about it!

Dialog

1. Study - Read the dialog again to see how the vocab words are used.

Liz Phair was recently divorced from her husband. But on her new album, she doesn’t sing about her anger towards a man that hurt her. Rather, she sings from the perspective of the person who did the hurting. It takes guts to write from that point of view – and it’s extremely rare to hear a woman doing it.
“Why Can’t I?” is a song about the excitement of meeting someone new, falling in love with him, and cheating on a boyfriend. Check out some of the lyrics:
Get a load of[/def] me, get a load of you
Walkin’ down the street, and I hardly know you
It’s just like we were meant to be
Holding hands with you, and we’re out at night
Got a girlfriend, you say it isn’t right
And I’ve got someone waiting too

Discussion

I’ve always loved Liz Phair. There’s just something about her that’s captivating. She doesn’t have the most beautiful voice, or the most beautiful face, but somehow she’s still extraordinarily attractive. She has a star quality that’s hard to define. She’s unorthodox, and that’s what makes her interesting.
I really like Liz’s new album. It’s much different than the others, which is great. I always enjoy it when a musician I like changes her style.
