Canadian Nelly Furtado exploded onto the music scene in the year 2000 with her first album, Whoa[/def] Nelly!. The album sold over 5 million copies and made Nelly one of the biggest stars in music. Songs like “Turn of the Light” and “On the Radio” became huge hits and “I’m Like a Bird” won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
Three years later, Nelly returns with a new album entitled Folklore. Read on to learn all about it!

Folklore is an impressive album. It’s much different from Whoa Nelly!, but in a good way. About the change, Nelly says, “I think I’ve grown a lot. A lot of the songs on my first album, I was a teenager still; I was just kind of writing, writing away, and hadn’t experienced all that stuff. I just wanted to share goodness and positivity and bright colors with the world. Now, I’m stepping back and understanding that I can do both; I can still be positive and yet really raw and real at the same time.”
The first single from Try This is called “Powerless (Say What You Want).” Check out some of the lyrics:
Paint my face in your magazines
Make it look whiter than it seems
Paint me over with your dreams
Shove away my ethnicity
Burn every notion that I may have a flame inside to fight
And say just what is on my mind
Without offending your might
‘Cause this life is too short
to live it just for you
But when you feel so powerless
what are you gonna do
So say what you want
Say what you want

About the song’s lyrics, Nelly says: “Okay, I know I’m going to be stereotyped in my life because that is the world we live in; that’s society. But the song tries to find some sense of order in this complicated world.” (nellyfurtado.com)

Discussion

I’m a huge Nelly fan. I absolutely love her music. I think she’s one of the most talented people on the face of the earth.
I’ve been listening to Folklore every day for the past week and I’m convinced that it’s one of the best albums of the year. I hope you check it out – and I really hope you feel the same way!
Rock on,
Migs
