Fat cats are people who have either a lot of money or a lot of influence or power. Usually, they are both wealthy and influential. The expression fat cat is typically used to describe people who show off their high-end social status: people who drive luxury cars, smoke expensive cigars and wear ultra-chic and expensive clothes.
Fat cat can be used to poke fun at people who are not really wealthy but are “putting on airs” – pretending to be wealthy. For example, at a party last weekend I noticed one of my friends drinking some very expensive scotch whiskey. “Look at this fat cat,” I said.
In the above example, Ben Affleck uses the expression fat cats to suggest that politicians are rich, self-interested people who care more for their own prosperity than they do for average people and the common good.
