John:  You know, there is a new movie that is kind of a play on Nike and shoe executives here in Portland, called Elizabethtown. Have you seen that?

Dave:  I haven’t seen it. I’ve heard a bit about it.

John:  Yeah, I think it’s filmed here a little bit, but, ah, it’s about an executive that gets fired from his job and then, then he heads home. I think he falls in love with the flight attendant on the flight home.

Dave:  Oh. Yeah.

John:  Ah, but, my friend’s have been talking about it and they say it’s really good. Do you like Kirsten Dunst? She’s in it.

Dave:  Yeah, she’s okay.

John:  Wasn’t she also in Batman?

Dave:  She was in Spiderman, I know.

John:  Spiderman, that’s right.

Dave:  Yeah. Um, this movie. So, it’s a guy, he works for Nike and…?

John:  Well, they don’t exactly say the name of the company but, but, you know, it’s implied that it is. And then he gets the axe. I think, you know, he’s kind of in the dumps and he’s down and out, you know, doesn’t really know where his life is going to go. And then he falls in love with this quirky flight attendant who is more of an optimist.

Dave:  Oh right. I know a little bit about this movie. That’s where he’s at the end of his rope and he’s about to kill himself when he gets a phone call that says, you know, his father has died. So he has got to fly back to, you know, like Kentucky or wherever and collect his father’s remains.

Discussion

When life throws you a curve ball – when something unexpected happens – how do you deal with it? When you’re feeling down and out, how do you find strength? Are you an optimist, someone who believes that good things will always happen in the end? Or are you a pessimist, someone who doubts that the good things will always beat the bad things?
