It’s impossible to be too kind to your mother. You owe her so much because she gave birth to you and raised you. In the United States, we have Mother’s Day, a holiday that honors our moms. Some holidays have widespread traditions attached to them. But how families honor their mothers and grandmothers varies. Listen to Marni and Amanda discuss how they celebrate the holiday.

Amanda

Marni: So it’s almost Mother’s Day.

Amanda: It is?

Marni: Yes! Second Sunday in May!

Amanda: My bad.

Marni: Do you not do something traditionally for your mother?

Amanda: Uh, it’s not a big deal.

Marni: Really?

Amanda: It really isn’t.

Marni: It’s a big deal in my family. Well, I also am very close to my mother so I feel this need to honor her. She’s a great mother. She’s always been there for me. But I sort of like this…you know, as a woman I have this natural desire to just celebrate mothers.

Amanda: Absolutely. What’s your take on the different generations and who the focus should be on Mother’s Day?

Marni: I think it’s kind of always a generation up, I don’t know…

Amanda: No, I agree.

Marni: Maybe if you’re a new mother, the focus is always on you, but you know, my mom always celebrated my grandmother, I always celebrated my mother…

Amanda: I was gonna say, it’s not such a big deal in our home with me to my mother, but’s me to my grandmother and my mother to her mother. Absolutely. Until she is gone, then it will…

Marni:...kind of trickle down?

Amanda: Absolutely.

Marni: Interesting. So now, do you send flowers? It’s apparently the biggest day for flowers…

Amanda: I know. It’s so generic, but what else are you supposed to send?

Marni: But they’re beautiful.

Amanda: I know!

Marni: You know, I always try to get a special gift, but, you know, flowers, they work.

Amanda: Absolutely. Send the very best.

Amanda almost forgot that Mother’s Day is approaching, but Marni reminded her. Mother’s Day is a big deal in Marni’s family but not in Amanda’s.

Amanda and Marni agree that on Mother’s Day you should honor your mother and let your mother honor your grandmother. Nonetheless, in Amanda’s family, the focus of the holiday is her grandmother.

Amanda and Marni wish they could think of a special gift to send on Mother’s Day. They usually send flowers like most people do.

Mother’s Day this year is this Sunday. Will you send your mother something? Will you see her? Is there a holiday like Mother’s Day in your country?
