Trash Talking

Trash Talking

Date: May 31 2007

Topic: Conversational English

Author: phoogoo

Lesson

My brother and I went to the Yankees vs. Red Sox game last Tuesday. I have to say, there was a lot of trash talking at the game. I heard a lot of Yankee fans shout things like "Red Sox suck," or "go home Red Sox fans." Even though there were not nearly as many Red Sox fans they could certainly dish it out as well.  It helped that the Red Sox crushed the Yankees 7-3. We even saw one fan spit on another fan. If it were the Mariners or the A's or something it might not have been so heated. But the Yankees and Red Sox have a rivalry that goes back a long way.

Vocabulary

Yankees (n.)- One of New Yorks professional baseball teams located in the Bronx

Red Sox (n.) - Boston's baseball team

Mariners (n. ) - Seattle's baseball team

A's (n.) - Oakland's baseball team

Discussion

Is it common in other cultures for people to trash talk? What do people trash talk about? Sports? Politics? Relationships? Fashion? Is it serious or just a friendly game?

In my country you can hear trash talks at every step you take! For example between driver and podestrain, salesman and customer. This is awfully, isn`t it?

In my country, people don’t trash talk about politics or fashion. Sometime they can trash talk when watching football match or something like that. In fact, I don’t know much trash talk ’s word and I don’t like to use it.

i’m not lazy as our colleague so i give a comment to this lesson. it’s a bad thing to insult someone, especially if it concern games. i think that is consequence of education and we must working hardly to diffuse values of mutuel respect.
at the end i thank you very much

I think that's horrible to for someone who is watching a soccer or baseball game and there are people talking a lot of bad things or trash talking… It's just a game, but many people give the blood for see your team win the competition!
