Musical styles always cycle. Sure, there’s a progression in music, but artists and fans always return to older styles. Every so often a new star will emerge with a fresh take on a musical style that had almost been forgotten. Marni just discovered one such artist. Listen to her tell Amanda about it.

Amanda: So I got a gift certificate to iTunes,
Marni: Oh yeah?
Amanda: But I’ve kind of…I can’t believe it, I’ve run out of artists and tracks.
Marni: Really?
Amanda: Do you have any recommendations?
Marni: Have you heard of Amy Winehouse?
Amanda: No.
Marni: Really…I, I’m really…I’m really getting into her, I gotta say. She is a female vocalist, very uh…she’s kind of sultry...
Amanda: Okay.
Marni: And, uh, she’s young, she’s British. And I read this article with her in Bust. Do you ever read Bust? Anyway, it was kind of…She likes to drink, she’s not afraid of the drink, she likes to party. She’s young. But on her music it’s just like…I don’t know, it’s good. It’s gritty.
Amanda: So you said “sultry,” but if you had to put in a genre, what would it be? Would it be like Norah Jones?
Marni: No, not at all.
Amanda: Would it be like Pink?
Marni: No, very different. All of her backing band is very old soul, and it’s great. And she’s uh…
Amanda: If you absolutely had to compare her to somebody, who would you say?
Marni: She’d kind of got that new Irma Thomas, sort of Etta James kinda vibe.
Amanda: Okay.
Marni: She’s singing about drinkin’ and partyin’.
Amanda: Just having a good time?
Marni: Yeah.
Amanda: Sounds good. I can’t wait to download her.
Marni: You should.

Strangely enough, Amanda has run out of new music to look into. Yet she has a gift certificate to iTunes, a website where you can download music. Marni recommends Amy Winehouse, a young singer who she says like to drink.
Amanda asks if Winehouse is like Norah Jones, a well-known singer and pianist. Marni says she’s not. Amanda asks if Winehouse is like raunchy pop star Pink and Marni says no to that too, Amanda presses Marni to compare Winehouse to somebody and she finally settles on Irma Thomas and Etta James, soul singers from the 1960s. James was somewhat famously involved in drugs.
If a friend of yours had money to burn on iTunes, who would you recommend?
