There are 8 types of phrases in English and I think it's easier to learn this language by this way. The first group is called verbal phrases. The verbs taken in Imperative mood would be a good example for showing what my idea means in practice. It's simple: go, don't go, swim, don't swim. These verbs are notional. All except the verb don't which is auxiliary. Link verbs form a single group of several verbs and a noun, pronoun, numeral, adjective or another notional or modal verb.

I beg your pardon for forgetting to mention one more phrase.

It's called independent. Greetings like hello, hi, bye and interjections such as wow, oh,ouch etc should be considered as a singly taken category.

Thanks for your commentary, Man. It's nice to hear from you!

Sincerely yours, Alexander

The last type of phrases is defined by this way – I call them relative phrases which denote words like those: who, what, why, where, when, which, whom etc. They can have prepositions and in this case you have a possibility of classifying them as prepositional ones.

Mixed phrases consist of mixture of other types connected between themselves in grammatically subordinated order. Their diggital code will be written down by such a way. Examples: Do you go… 7-141; my sister and her friend 7-454; as big as a mountain 7-5151.

Structural phrases participate in construction of complex sentences or connect homogenious words. They are shown here, in the following small list to give you an idea of differentiation from other types of phrases: and, but, or, so.

Noun phrases are simple in their recognition. I’ll give you some examples for showing the representatives of this group: Mike, an attractive girl, ten visitors, Moscow, Germany, Swiss Alps, a fountain, the breakfast, my dear friend, children. These phrases are things and phenomenons which are found around us every day and everywhere in all spheres of our life or activity. They are parts of something, numerous characteristics, details, qualities and in our imagination we can create bright images of motions.

Adverbal phrases are very important in speech and form a single, outstanding group. Sometimes they resemble prepositional ones and you can put them in the group previously described. Here’re some examples: already, yet, now, once, at 5 o’clock, in a week, ten years ago, often, above the table, over the sea, beyond the mountains etc. If there’s a preposition in a phrase you can put it into any of the groups related to each other, but in case of preposition’s absence it would certainly be another type.

In Russian, Spanish or Italian there’re endings found to show differences. In English it should be noticed that lots of prepositional phrases can be found. Examples: Directions of moving – to the park, river, lake, forest. Location – in the park, river, lake, forest; at home, at school etc. Location on a surface – on the floor, table, road, grass. Penetration into a place – into the box, room, bottle. As these phrases are very numerous you should learn them in a single group and classify as such ones.
