When you think of beer, what color is it? Is it clear like water but slightly yellow and bubbly? Or is it almost black and syrupy? There are lots of different kinds of beer and some of them are specially brewed only one place in the world. Generally, smaller, local breweries produce nicer beer that’s darker in color. Beer from big breweries often isn’t as good, but it’s usually much less expensive. Listen to Jason and Mason talk about beer over a couple of pints at the local pub.

Jason

Mason:  What are you drinking there, Jason?

Jason:  It’s a Lagunitas IPA.

Mason:  Oh, fine Californian beer.

Jason:  Indeed.

Mason:  Indeed, indeed. I’m slumming it with the Pabst here.

Jason:  Slumming it!

Mason:  I mean, it was like a dollar, what am I gonna do?

Jason:  It’s true. Those macrobrew beers are a lot less expensive.

Mason:  It’s a little spendier, definitely, but you pay for quality.

Jason:  I was gonna ask if you enjoy the taste of the macrobrew beer.

Mason:  I love uh…Well certainly I appreciate the finer points of the microbrew, the many subtle varieties. But, honestly, sometimes, just a little piss beer does me right. I’m not gonna lie.

Jason:  You know what’s funny is here in the Northwest we have sort of the option of dozens of beers, like, at most bars. But a lot of places I’ve been traveling and stuff there’s only like a couple of beers and they’re all sort of…

Mason:  And they all taste like this.

Jason:  They’re all sort of the pale pilsner…

Mason:  Lager-y…And I don’t know what that is. If the country’s used to not drinking beer. Because I drink this when it’s hot out, I just want something that kind of goes down like water, but it’s gonna get me a little bit buzzed.

Jason:  But if that’s your only option, like Tsingtao in China or San Miguel in Spain. What if it’s really cold and you want a nice, thick beer?

Mason:  Doesn’t happen. There’s nothing.

Discussion

Mason and Jason are sitting together at a bar. Jason is drinking a nice Californian beer, while Mason is drinking an inexpensive pint of Pabst Blue Ribbon, one of the most common beers in the United States. Mason says that he likes microbrewed beer, but that sometimes a beer like Pabst is exactly what he wants, especially if it’s hot outside. He jokingly calls Pabst “piss beer” because it is almost the color of urine.

Jason mentions that some countries only have beer like Pabst. Mason wonders if those countries just aren’t used to drinking beer. In any case, it can be hard to find a dark beer some places in the world, even on a cold day when heavier beers taste the best.

What kind of beer is common where you live? Have you ever had beer from another country?
