Brett: Well Zach, welcome to the team! How do you like it so far?
Zach: Oh, I love it. I’ve been having a great time. I’ve been here for about a week.
Brett: Cool! So what were you doing, uh, before you were working here?
Zach: Well I was a contractor part-time up in Seattle working for a small company, uh, writing Web pages.
Brett: Oh, good, so that’s a perfect fit for what we’re doing here. So are you, uh, originally from this area, or have you always been living in Seattle, or… what’s your story?
Zach: Well I grew up in, uh, Michigan and I moved out to California to go to college. Um… and I’ve been down there for about, was down there for about ten years, and then came up here- moved to Portland, and went over to Seattle for about a year to see what was going on.
Brett: So, you think you’re gonna like, uh, working in the small company environment, like we have here?
Zach: Yeah, I love working at a small company. There’s a lot to do. Uh, you get to try out new things every day.
Brett: Yeah, well, it’s always something different every day here, so, uh… Well, we’re really excited to have you here and we’re glad you came on board.

Discussion
Brett and Zach are just getting to know each other in the conversation above. When you first meet a new friend, it is polite to ask him questions about his life so that you can learn more about him. However, you have to be careful not to ask questions that are too personal.
Brett does a great job of asking Zach about his work history and where he is from, but he is careful not to ask questions about his love life or other personal things.
What questions do you normally ask someone when you first meet them? Is this custom accepted in your home country? Come to the Life Goes On Message boards and let us know what you think!
Have a happy June!
