The Spice Girls are the pop princesses of the world. The group started with a newspaper advertisement for auditions for the group, which gathered a huge number of hopefuls. From hundreds who tried, the five Spice Girls were selected. The girls were renamed Sporty, Scary, Posh, Ginger and Baby. Together they became a pop phenomenon with nine number one singles in the UK. However, personal differences caused them to break up in 1998. Since then, Victoria Beckham, formerly Posh Spice, has remained popular and in the public eye through her marriage to soccer superstar David Beckham. But now, with a new single and a reunion tour, the Spice Girls as a whole are back in the limelight.

Mason:  I was talking with someone at the office yesterday and they mentioned that the Spice Girls were getting back together.

Jason:  Well three of ‘em.

Mason:  Oh yeah. Not all of them.

Jason:  Minus Posh and Sporty, who ah…

Mason:  What’s Sporty got going on?

Jason:  That’s a good question, you know.

Mason:  I mean, I understand. I understand why Posh wouldn’t. I mean, she’s got David Beckham, you know. She’s got the TV show.

Jason:  Yeah. Yeah.

Mason:  Spice Girls was like her gateway to the sweet life.

Jason:  Yeah. But I don’t know what Sporty has going on. But, I don’t know. Do you think it counts as the Spice Girls: three-fifths?

Mason:  No way. No way.

Jason:  Yeah. It is silly. Back in the day like they were like good. I mean, one of my friends is really into punk, but he says the Spice Girls is one of the best shows he’s ever seen.

Mason:  I mean, never saw their shows but I would imagine, yeah, that’s the kind of…

Jason:  His only complaint was that instead of an opening act they just had commercials.

Mason:  What?

Jason:  They had commercials play on a big screen. Isn’t that ridiculous?

Mason:  Are you serious?

Jason:  Yeah. And that was like seven years ago. You can only imagine what lows of, like, corporate worship they’ll reach in their reunion tour.

Mason:  Woah, woah. But that was, I mean, such an era, you know? I mean they pretty much ushered in that whole girl-group/boy-group thing.

Jason:  Yeah.

Mason:  They got their movie made. Which, did you know Meat Loaf was in their movie? He was, like…

Jason:  No?

Mason:  ...the tour bus driver…

Jason:  I kinda wanna watch it.

Mason:  In Spice World.

Jason:  Wow.

Mason:  Yeah.

Discussion

Jason had heard that only three of the Spice Girls would go on the tour, but Posh and Sporty changed their minds and went. But Jason is probably right about one thing, the concerts will be very commercial. Jason and Mason can’t believe they showed commercials before the Spice Girls’ performance instead of an opening act.

Still, the Spice Girls must be great performers. Jason’s friend, who likes punk music, loved the Spice Girls’ show, and Mason seems to like their movie.

All in all, Jason and Mason are amazed that the Spice Girls are back together. Are you excited about the reunion tour and new music? What do you think of the idea of commercials as an opening act?

I love spice girls performances. specially ‘baby spice’. ‘Two become one’ is my favourite song. Showing commercials as openning act in come back shows fairly reasonable i think.
