Hi Friends!
Art is an important part of life. Luckily, it’s not hard to make art a part of your life. You can go to art museums and art galleries and see lots of interesting and inspiring work.
Of course, you can also buy art and keep it at your home. A common way to purchase art is at an auction. Beth recently attended an auction in Portland, Oregon. Listen to her conversation with Miguel to learn all about it!

Beth:  Hey Beth, you go to a lot of those art events around town, don’t you?

Miguel:  Yeah, I try to stay connected to the art community. And, uh, recently I went to this really cool event. It was a fundraiser for AIDS, and, uh, it was in a really neat advertising agency. There were like two thousand people there.

Miguel:  Two thousand people! What were they bidding on?

Beth:  Well, there were, I think over three hundred pieces of art and there was a live auction and a silent auction. So, there was so much going on. There were really cool people and everyone got dressed up and it was really festive, and totally fun.

Miguel:  So did you actually like some of the art that was there, or did you bid or anything like that? Or was it really expensive?

Beth:  It was really expensive. I was just, uh, taking in the whole event, and having a good time, but I wasn’t a serious buyer.

Miguel:  So what kind of prices are we talking here? Was it like thousands of dollars for a painting, or more, or what?

Beth:  Yeah. It was insane. There were two pieces that sold for $10,000. But, uh, for the most part there was a, I guess a, a lower range, some were selling for three hundred and there were all these bidding wars going on, so it was really cool to watch.

Miguel:  That’s really neat. I want to check that out. How did you hear about it?

Beth:  I found out about it from some friends. It was really an awesome event. I would recommend, uh, learning more about the Cascade AIDS Art Project.

It sounds like Beth enjoyed her art auction experience. The whole thing seems like it would be great fun. Seeing people dressed up in their nicest clothes is always enjoyable, and the actual auction sounds intriguing.
I love art, but I’ve never been to an art auction. I think I’ll definitely take Beth’s advice and check one out as soon as I get the chance.
Have a great week!
