When are you happiest? For most people, it’s when you’re doing your favorite hobby like fishing or sewing. It’s always great when your hobby does something practical as well. Like, for instance, get you around town.
Jason saw Bob putting on his small, old-fashioned motorcycle helmet and getting ready to ride, so he decided to stop and talk to him for a few minutes about motorcycles.

Jason: I’m Jason and I’m here with a motor cycle rider. What’s your name?
Bob Wingfield.
This is your motorcycle?
Yes, it is.
And you just got it today?
Yes, I did. They stole my other one and I just took my insurance and bought me a new one today.
And what kind of motorcycle is it?
It’s a 1996 Harley Davidson Fat Boy.
Cool. And so, Harley Davidsons are sort of a big culture in the United States. Do you want to talk about that?
Well, actually I’ve rode all kinds of motorcycles. I started riding Harleys back in the ‘80s and I like them over anything I’ve ever rode. They’re good, dependable motorcycles and it’s kind of my heart, you know what I mean?
Yeah.
It’s where I find my freedom, my peace and my serenity.
OK. So when you get on to ride, you kind of twist the handle like that to make it go. What’s that called?
That’s the throttle.
Throttle. Alright. And where’s the brake on this thing?
The brake is right here.
OK.
This is the clutch.
Cool.
And there’s a foot brake right down there, and you shift it with these foot levers here.
Right on. Well, thanks so much for taking a minute to talk to me.

Bob got a new motorcycle today. His old one was stolen, but luckily it was insured so he was able to get a new one. Bob got a Harley. Harelys are a well-known kind of motorcycle that, unlike a lot of newer brands that make motorcycles covered in plastic, makes bikes seem to be made of nothing but metal, rubber and leather. Bob has ridden all kinds of motorcycles, but he says Harleys are his favorite.
Jason also gets an explanation of a few of the important parts of a motorcycle. The throttle is on the handle bars and when you turn it, it gives the bike gas and makes it go faster. You brake with your hands too, just like on a bicycle. You shift with your feet and you have to use a clutch, just like with a standard transmission car.
But motorcycles aren’t just a bunch of Bob. He says they give him freedom, peace and serenity, What does that for you?
