Can a scary movie be too scary? That’s the point, right? But what if it’s so scary you can barely watch it. Wouldn’t that be like food so spicy you can’t eat it?
The concept behind The Strangers is familiar. Everyone has been in a house in the middle of nowhere and thought, “If something happened out here, no one would hear me scream.”
Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman are a couple spending the night at a house in the woods. They’re stalked by three masked killers who hide in the background of many of the shots unbeknownst to the characters.
Now, Beren loves scary movies. But The Strangers was almost too much. Listen to her talk to Marni about it.

Beren: I just went and saw this movie, a scary movie, called The Strangers.
Marni: You love scary movies. I do too and I’ve been wondering. So how was it? Scary?
Beren: Oh my God! OK, so I kinda got roped into going, like I didn’t really want to go. I was like, “Oh, that looks stupid and I already went and saw The Ruins,” which was awesome too. Anyway, I was like, “I don’t really want to go.” And I’d read reviews and I remember being on the Internet that day and just glancing over CNN or something like there was a critic weighing in, “Is it maybe too scary? Is that why it’s getting ripped to shreds?”
Marni: Oh, interesting!
Beren: So that piqued my curiosity.
Marni: Too scary? What is that? What constitutes “too scary”?
Beren: So I went to the theater and I was with two friends. The movie starts and I’d say within 15, 20 minutes, I wanted to run to the front of the screen, in front of all those people and just scream and shake my head and run out of the theater. I seriously was so scared…
Marni: You couldn’t handle it?
Beren: I couldn’t handle it. I can handle really scary movies, but I was hiding. I was just like, “Oh my God.”
Marni: Because it’s based on true events, right?
Beren: Mm-hmm. Like a couple goes out into the country…out in the middle of nowhere. It was brutal from beginning to end. You’re just like, “I cannot believe this.” And I think that’s what makes it so scary it’s…there’s no humor, really. It’s unrelenting.

Beren’s friends took her to see The Strangers even though she didn’t really want to see it. A few minutes in, she thought about leaving, but not because the movie was bad…because it was just so scary!
The story was inspired by true events, and like a real-life murder there is little humor. It’s terrifying from beginning to end. So if that sounds like fun to you, check it out.
Have you ever been afraid while you were in the woods? What’s sort of setting is the scariest to you?
