You know you’ve really made it as a musician once you get to put out a greatest hits album. After five Top 10 albums, Annie Lennox is finally there. Earlier this year, the Scottish singer released The Annie Lennox Collection. The album includes two new songs as well as 12 classic tunes from Lennox’s nearly 20-year career.

Actually, Lennox has been around for even longer than that. Before starting her solo career, she was in the Eurythmics. Their first big hit, “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This),” came out in 1983 and went on to become a hit again when covered by Marilyn Mason.

Beren didn’t think she’d see Annie Lennox release a greatest hits album, but Marni knew all along.

Beren:  If you’d told me back in the 80s that Annie Lennox would still be around today, I would not have believed you.

Marni:  Really? I’m not surprised. I think she had staying power.

Beren:  She has been named one of the best singers of all time by VH1 and Rolling Stone…

Marni:  Yeah.

Beren:  But I definitely think just her solo career…I mean, it just sounds so dated to me. But that could just be a personal preference, ‘cause I think the Eurythmics actually have a lot of staying power, you know?

Marni:  Yeah, I can see that. And I think there’s probably a lot of bands that were influenced by the Eurythmics. But I think she does have an incredible voice.

Beren:  Isn’t she kind of known for her activism?

Marni:  She is, yeah. She and…I think she and Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics donated a lot of money to Greenpeace and Amnesty International. And I know she’s also a spokesperson for the campaign to help Burma.

Beren:  Oh, wow. She’s speaking out.

Discussion

Beren is surprised by how much staying power Annie Lennox has. To her, Lennox’s music sounds a little dated. But she agrees that Lennox has a good voice. Both Beren and Marni like Lennox’s old band, the Eurythmics.

Marni also admires Annie Lennox for her activism. It’s not uncommon for celebrities like Lennox to promote their favorite charities and causes. Some, like Angelina Jolie and Bono, are even able to influence politicians and create change. In 2005, Bono was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize!

Do you think celebrities should speak out about political issues? What cause would you like to be a spokesperson for?

I do think celebrities should speak out about political issues, you know, they live in this world and they could help out a lot things, like global warming, hunger, diseases then its social responsability. Many famous people stayng power have enough money and time to do that. If a were a spokesperson I would like to speak out for hungry, sick and poor people from Africa especially, its beyond me to know that we have enough food and resources in the world for basically all people, even though, there are lots and lots of people like us just  dying, like if they were living in other planet..it really makes me fell bad.

Celebrities have to encourage people to speak out and I think it´s the best way to stand for something you want to change. Celebrities have the power to make people to think and to follow ´em, then I think they´re the right spokespeople to fight for some cause.

If I were a spokesman I´d fight for a good education in my country. Here in Brazil the education is not strong as in the world, so I´d fight for better conditions and better teachers for our future politicians!

In my view, everybody have right to speak out about political issues. Today the world advocates people to say what the think and what they want to say.

To be a spokesperson can say what the really want to say and also can help peolpe who want to say but have no choice to say!If I were a  spokesperson. i'll stand for pubilc to say what the think and what they want to do .

I believe that there is no problem with that. If a celebrity wanted to speak out about political issues. In my country, lot of celebrities speak out  for the campaign to help politicians here.
