Remember that awesome history teacher you had in high school, the one who told all the funny stories and inspired you to read everything you could find about the Battle of Waterloo and the last tsar of Russia? Or how about that awful math teacher who smelled weird and always gave you poor grades?

Good or bad, teachers often make a strong impression on us. But what makes a good teacher, and what makes a bad teacher? Listen to the dialog and find out what Devan and Marni think.

Dialog

Marni

Devan

Marni: So, what do you think makes a good or a bad teacher? You’re in school right now, right?

Devan: Yes. And I have good and bad teachers right now.

Marni: OK.

Devan: Well, I think what makes a good teacher or a good professor is if they really care about what they’re teaching. Like there’s some teachers that just seem completely detached.

Marni: Right.

Devan: Teachers that just assign a lot of busy-work I feel like that’s a cop-out sort of, you know?

Marni: Yeah, absolutely. Well, I’m probably a little biased since I am a teacher. But I’m at the elementary level so it’s a little different. But I agree, I don’t like to assign busy-work because it doesn’t inspire kids to learn. But I look to someone…you know, I try to be a mentor to kids and really get them excited about learning. I don’t…I don’t want to be too strict, but…

Devan: Would you say you’re a pretty easy-going teacher?

Marni: I am in some respects but I definitely have my limitations and I’m very firm. I like to say firm but fair. But I think that I had a lot of bad teachers in my growing up, so I really strive to be a good teacher.

Discussion

Devan is in college right now and has both good and bad professors. For her, a good teacher is someone who is passionate about their subject and doesn’t assign a lot of meaningless work.

Marni agrees with Devan’s ideas about what makes a good teacher. She teaches elementary school children and tries to be firm but not too strict. She thinks it’s important to inspire students and be a mentor to them.

I teach programming and web-page design courses in University. In terms of my experiences, if students understant what i teach, they will have more interest in lesson. So I think that students should be the main role in learning activities now, teacher must change trandational instructional strategies into more meaningful learning.

I think what makes a good teacher is being conscientious.if a teacher is concscientious they can care about what they do.I agree with Marni,a good teacher should be firm but not too strict.I think being moderate is the most important factor.

To be a teacher is really hard , for example I´m a colombian teacher and here to be a teacher isn´t easy the students don´t care about subjects because they never lost their course for it the secondary class as like to kindergarde. _When you assign any they don´t make it. for they don´t exist busy work, for they only exist cop-out.

I hope that at other country would be different

I had a Math teacher and I still keep in touch with him. He inspired me to study Math, then I finished my Math college, I´m not interested in being a teacher though.

To be teacher is more than just staying in front of a bunch of pupils and trying to teach Algebra,etc. You gotta be a person who cares about the future of the others and have the wish of helping the others.

I´m a person who have another vocation, whatsoever I would be the person I am without the lessons and the motivation of my teachers, they taught me to never give up and let behind the goal you wanna accomplish, then I thank a milion each lesson learnt.

The good teacher is the one who doesn't care about the grades but he cares about what he can teach his students and also the one who acts friendly with his students.

The best teacher I've ever had is one of my current college professors, really cool and friendly and his class is very interesting and he is not bound by the book which makes him even more interesting.

What makes a good teacher? From my point of view, a good teach is someone who loves teaching, and is passionate about the subject he is teaching. He should not answer phones during the class and should not always finish his class at least half an hour early. Now I am currently doing my master degree. There was a Finance teacher last semester. He always ended up class 1 hour earlier. He went through lecture slides very quickly without discussing anything and he never set his mobile phone silent. He even answered phones during the class.He is the most irresponsible teacher I've ever seen.
