In American culture, mothers were traditionally seen as the nurturers in the family, while fathers were considered the breadwinners. But for many 21st century families, these roles are changing. Today, it’s common for fathers to be active and involved in their children’s lives. In some families, it’s even the dad who stays at home with the kids while the mom goes to work and brings home the bacon.

Since 1908 people in the US have been honoring their fathers by celebrating Father’s Day. The exact date of Father’s Day changes each year. This year, it will be held on June 21st.

Dale is the proud papa of a 2-year-old boy. Listen to him and Devan talk about Father’s Day.

Devan:  So Father’s Day is coming up, and I know you’re a father, are you excited?

Dale:  I am extremely excited. I think…This would be technically the third year. ‘Cause the first time I celebrated Father’s Day my wife had my son in her tummy. So this is the third time. But he’s getting older, so it feels a lot more exciting that he can understand it, I think.

Devan:  So he understands what Father’s Day is?

Dale:  I don’t think he’ll understand what Father’s Day is, but it makes me feel good that there’s a day for us fathers to be at least recognized. But nowadays the culture of the United States is a little bit different. More fathers are getting involved with their kids so it’s kind of nice to have a little bit more recognition.

Devan:  I think that it’s definitely good to honor fathers. Did you…Barack Obama made a speech on Father’s Day last year just talking about male role models and how they’re very important and how we need more fathers in the home. It was a very moving speech, so…you know, it’s nice to see people like you who are taking care of their children and stepping up to their responsibilities.

The first time Dale celebrated Father’s Day as a dad was when his wife was pregnant. Now his son is two years old and Dale can’t wait for Father’s Day to come around again.

Both Devan and Dale agree that it’s important to honor fathers. Devan mentions a speech that Barack Obama made on Father’s Day last year encouraging fathers to be involved in their kids’ lives. It’s important for children to have both male and female role models.

In your country, what is the father’s role in the family? Is there anything you’d like to say to your dad on Father’s Day?

I think nowadays, most of Chinese family, father and mother both work, parents don't worry about the role in family, they worry about there are little male teachers in kindergarten.

"I love you" is not Chinese style, so maybe just a "Happy Father's day".

We have father's day and mother's day too. Also these are changed during cultures.

Nowadays these celebration days depend on Islamic culture in Iran. Father's day is anual on Ali's birthday in Al-Rajab 13th every Arabic year and it isn't fixed on one day of our calander. Mother's day is depend on Islamic culture too. It's on Fatemeh's birthday. Fatemeh is the doughter of Islam prophet, Mohammad peace be upon him, and Ali is the Fatemeh's husband. He is known as one of Islamic guide after prophet is died.

I love my father and my mother too. We don't notice only to the specific day and also buy gift, flower, write a message, go to restaurant and etc and say "I love you" to them and celebrate when we need.
