Certain songs always make you think about a particular time in your life. Like every time you hear “I Swear” by Boys II Men, don’t you think about kissing Ben Hansel behind the gym at your eighth grade dance? OK, maybe not. But there are probably other songs that you associate with specific memories.
With the decade almost over, it’s fun to think about what songs will always remind you of the 2000s. Will one be “Milkshake” by Kelis? “B.O.B.” by Outkast? Or what about “There’s No Home for You Here” by The White Stripes? Find out what Marni and Mason’s picks are for the songs of the decade.

Mason: So I didn’t even think about it but, you know, it’s gonna be the end of the decade soon.
Marni: Right.
Mason: I’m lookin’ at this post, this guy’s put a list together of like his favorite, what he thinks are the best songs of the last ten years. And it’s weirdin’ me out how…I mean like Radiohead Kid A came out in 2000 so he’s got “Idioteque” on here. It’s a great song, but…
Marni: But it feels like…
Mason: It just feels like it would’ve happened so much longer ago. There’s like Outkast, The Killers. I think they’d be on my list.
Marni: I disagree with that one.
Mason: Arcade Fire. This is definitely like a hipster indie list.
Marni: Yeah, I’m getting that.
Mason: But look, number nine, he’s got Britney Spears’ “Toxic” on here. This is eclectic.
Marni: You know what, that’s a great song. She gets props for that.
Mason: Is it?
Marni: Yeah, I absolutely agree with that because I think it’s one of her best songs.
Mason: Some Kanye, “Jesus Walks.” I don’t think I know that one.
Marni: Yeah, you know, Kanye is very controversial now but I think if you look at the decade as a whole...
Mason: Well, when he came out he was all the rage or whatever, and like everyone loved his music, but now it’s become about his big bravado and you just talk about Kanye being Kanye.
Marni: Right.

Marni and Mason are looking at a music critic’s list for the best songs of the 2000s. They agree with some of his choices, but not all of them.
Mason likes Radiohead but he can’t believe their album Kid A came out in 2000. It seems to him like it came out much longer ago. He also likes the band The Killers, but Marni wouldn’t put them on her list of the best music of the 2000s.
Marni approves of “Toxic” by Britney Spears as a choice for one of the top songs of the decade. She thinks it’s one of Britney’s best. Mason and Marni agree that Kanye is another great artist of the 2000s, even though his reputation as a controversial figure sometimes overshadows his music.
What are your picks for the best music of the 2000s?
