There is nothing that’ll make you feel older than turning on the radio and realizing you don’t know any of the new songs that are being played. But keeping up with new music can be a full-time job. Whether you hear about new bands by reading music magazines, listening to the radio or simply through word of mouth, it seems there is always something out there that you still don’t know about yet. Find out what Marni and Jeff do to keep their music collections fresh.

Marni:  So Jeff, years ago I worked in a record store, and I felt like I was so in touch with new music. I knew all these different bands, and I knew what was going on. I swear to God, now that I haven’t been in that industry for a while, I feel like I have no idea what’s going on in music. Do you feel that way?

Jeff:  I used to work at a record store too, but I feel like your situation is a little more common, even for people with a past like that. A lot of my friends that I worked with are having a hard time keeping up.

Marni:  I think it’s sort of the nature of like, there are so many bands, and there are so many ways to get your music out there, you know, that now the Internet or whatever…. It’s almost overwhelming. And I think there’s some great stuff out there, but it’s hard to kind of sift through a lot of the stuff that isn’t so great.

Jeff:  Yeah, I actually kind of spend more time discovering new things than I should. But it’s also made me become more impatient, like things become stale faster.

Marni:  Right, right, right. I’m happy listening to some of my old records that I’m familiar with. I like them.

Marni used to work at a record store. Back then, she knew about a lot more new music. She listened to new music all the time as part of her job, but these days, she feels like she can’t keep up with all the new bands.

Jeff used to work at a record store, too. Even though he doesn’t work there anymore, he still keeps up with new bands. In fact, he spends so much time discovering new things, he gets tired of his old records quickly. Marni would rather enjoy her old records than drive herself crazy trying to keep up with all the latest bands.

Do you try to keep up with new music? How do you hear about new bands?

Believe me guys, it's too hard to keep up with all music nowadays. As a musician I know it's for sure. And if you're musician you should sometimes stay away from all new releases. Mostly I prefer to listen classics and music from my past.
