Some people go through one little crisis and never bounce back. Others, like Britney Spears, seem to be able to weather any storm.
Britney is one pop princess whose life hasn’t exactly been a fairytale. She’s gone through a painful divorce, struggled with her weight, and had a nervous breakdown...all in the public eye.
Yet she somehow keeps making albums. And although her life might seem like a disaster sometimes, her albums aren’t. They continue to reach the top of the charts and earn positive comments from critics. Hear Amy and Jeff talk about Britney’s latest, Femme Fatale.

Amy: Britney Spears still seems kind of crazy when you see pictures of her in tabloids, but it seems like she’s managed to put out this new album, and it’s gotten pretty good reviews. It’s gone to the top of the charts. What do you think? Is Britney back?
Jeff: I think that’s shocking. I forgot she even existed actually.
Amy: I know, she has been around for so long, and it seems like we’ve talked about her having a comeback already five or six times.
Jeff: Yeah. I actually thought about this the other day, and I didn’t even know she put out a new album, but she just kind of seems like a gross old mom to me.
Amy: She does definitely, when you see pictures of her, she definitely doesn’t look like a hot young, you know, pop star diva.
Jeff: Yeah.
Amy: But people keep coming back for more. This album, Femme Fatale, went to number one, it was number one in the US, Canada, Australia. On the top ten lists in every other country. I mean, it’s pretty phenomenal.
Jeff: Yeah, I mean, I don’t know. She’s definitely got a legacy, but I don’t know if it’s based on her musical talent, really. Especially these days.
Amy: You think it’s more her reputation as kind of a…
Jeff: Train wreck nightmare?
Amy: Yeah.
Jeff: Yeah.

Discussion
Amy says that Britney Spears has a new album out called Femme Fatale, which has sold well and received positive reviews. Jeff is surprised to hear this. He is not a Britney fan, and he can’t believe she’s still selling records.
There are often negative pictures and stories about Britney in the tabloids. Amy is impressed that in spite of this, Britney remains popular and continues to make new music. But Jeff thinks her popularity comes from her wild reputation, not her music.
Have you ever bounced back from a difficult experience? What do you think Britney’s legacy will be?
