Getting Involved

Intro

1. Learn Vocabulary - Learn some new vocabulary before you start the lesson.

2. Read and Prepare - Read the introduction and prepare to hear the audio.

When you live in a foreign country, you have the chance to experience that country’s culture. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to take part in a culture that is not your own.
In this lesson I am going to talk about some great ways to get involved in North American culture. Trying one or two of these ideas will enrich the time you spend here and will give you a new perspective on your experiences away from home!

Dialog

1. Listen and Read - Listen to the audio and read the dialog at the same time.

2. Study - Read the dialog again to see how the vocab words are used.

TAKE A CLASS
If you are here for a more than three months, a great way to get involved is by taking a class that interests you. I am not talking about another English class. Instead, think about taking a dance class, a painting workshop, or a nature walk with an expert. These types of classes are available at most community colleges. Ask for a course catalog and look under “Community Education” or ask someone at the college for help.
_VOLUNTEER
If you enjoy helping people, you can get involved by volunteering for a cause you believe in. There are many organizations that need people to come and spend time helping. You just need to decide what organization you would like to be a part of and then call to let them know you are interested in volunteering.
_GO TO CHURCH*
Churches offer you a wonderful way to become part of a community. Churches sponsor many activities, meetings and volunteering options each month. If you already have a religion that is a part of your life, look in the phone book for the church nearest you. If you don’t know what church you would like to go to, find several in your area and try them all until you find one you like.
