Hi Friends!
This week’s Real Life lesson gives you an example of how to reserve a hotel room. It is always best to call ahead of time for a room. If you call more than one hotel you can compare prices to make sure that you are getting a good deal. Always remember to ask if there are any special room rates available when you call a hotel or motel! Listen in as I call the Marriott to book a room for the upcoming weekend!

Dialog

1. Listen and Read - Listen to the audio and read the dialog at the same time.

Hotel Operator: Good afternoon Portland Marriott City Center on Broadway, how may I help you?

Tanis:  Hi! Reservations please?

Hotel Operator: Just a moment please.
Hotel Reservation Operator: Reservations, this is Tracy, how may I help you?

Tanis:  Hi! I’d like to check, uh, availability and prices for next weekend.

Hotel Reservation Operator: Okay, and next weekend starting Friday?

Tanis:  Yeah, starting Friday.

Hotel Reservation Operator: For how many nights?

Tanis:  For three nights.

Hotel Reservation Operator: City Center Marriott is not available next weekend. I do have the downtown Marriott available those three nights at the rate of seventy nine dollars per evening.

Tanis:  Seventy nine dollars per evening?

Hotel Reservation Operator: Yes.

Tanis:  And is that a special weekend rate or is there any…

Hotel Reservation Operator: Um, it’s part of our national promotion called “Come Out and Play”...

Tanis:  Uh huh.

Hotel Reservation Operator: So a certain number of our rooms are set aside for this special rate.

Tanis:  Okay. That seems pretty good. I did want to try and be closer to the water though…

Hotel Reservation Operator: It’s right across the street from Waterfront Park!

Tanis:  Oh! Okay! Well, that’s what I want then.

Hotel Reservation Operator: Oh, Okay. Would you like to book that now?

Tanis:  Yeah. What do I need to do if I want to book it right now?

Hotel Reservation Operator: Um, I’ll take your name, number, address. I can e-mail this reservation to you and I need a credit card to hold it.

Tanis:  Okay. Are you gonna run the credit card right now?

Hotel Reservation Operator: No.

Tanis:  Okay. Yeah, sure! Then I will book it!

Discussion

From this point on in the conversation, the Hotel Reservation Operator asked me for information about my name, address, phone number and credit card. She asked me if I wanted a smoking or non-smoking room and if I wanted one King size bed or two queen size beds.
When she finished asking me questions, she gave me a reservation number. When I go to the hotel next weekend I should take that number with me, just to be on the safe side.
Come to the “Life Goes On” Message Board and let me know how you all fare when making reservations! As always, I wish you all a wonderful week!
Your friend,
Tanis
