Lesson

Used to

Used to do

We use 'used to' for something that happened regularly in the past but no longer happens.

  • I used to smoke a packet a day but I stopped two years ago.
  • Ben used to travel a lot in his job but now, since his promotion, he doesn't.
  • I used to drive to work but now I take the bus.

We also use it for something that was true but  no longer is.

  • There used to be a cinema in the town but now there isn't.
  • She used to have really long hair but she's had it all cut off.
  • I didn't use to like him but now I do.

'Used to do' is different from 'to be used to doing' and 'to get used to doing'

to be used to doing

We use 'to be used to doing' to say that something is normal, not unusual.

  • I'm used to living on my own. I've done it for quite a long time.
  • Hans has lived in England for over a year so he is used to driving on the left now.
  • They've always lived in hot countries so they aren't used to the cold weather here.

to get used to doing

We use 'to get used to doing' to talk about the process of something becoming normal for us.

  • I didn't understand the accent when I first moved here but I quickly got used to it.
  • She has started working nights and is still getting used to sleeping during the day.
  • I have always lived in the country but now I'm beginning to get used to living in the city.

Thanks a lot albasel (Ahmed), that comment was kinda like a private lesson , hope it didnt take much of your time to explain those all :)

Though the expectations from teachers isnt less than that, they got used to being patient in front of all kinds of students ! ;) And it’s a thing which i admire that !

Hope you dont mind if i call your name from now on since i already know it , and though, i have no idea about the name ‘albasel’ that reminds me of an arabic word basal means onion ! :$

Dear friend R_P,

Thank you very much for your interest

now Let me give you some examples for using ” Used to ” in negative and question forms:

Negative :

I used to go fishing when I was 20 years old. [ affirmative]

I didn’t use to go fishing when I was 20 years old. [ Negative ]

( In negative we use ” didn’t + use to ” that is followed by an infinitive )

Another Example:

My friend R_P didn’t use to post comments on English-Baby.

( That means , she does now, she posts comments, but in the past she didn’t do that )

WH-Question:

when we use “used to” in question form we should follow this structure:

Question word + did + Subject ( noun or pronoun) + use to + do?

example:

What    did    you    use to    do   when you were in Paris?

What    did    she    use to    do    at school ?

What    did     R_P   use to    do    when she was young?

when we answer we use ” used to ” :

She used to visit the library three times a week.

In Yes/No Question:

we use this structure

Did + Subject ( noun or pronoun) + use to + verb ( infinitive ) ?

Examples:

Did    you     use to     play basketball    when you were young?

Did     R_P    use to     get up early       when she was a student?

Answer:

Yes, she did.        or       No, she didn’t.

I hope I could make it simple for you

best wishes

Regards
