Valentine’s Day may be the only holiday celebrating love, but New Year’s Eve must at least be in the running for most romantic day of the year.
What makes New Year’s Eve so romantic? There’s the champagne, the sparkling lights, the winter weather that provides the perfect excuse to cuddle. Then there’s the tradition of kissing someone at midnight. Even if you aren’t in a relationship, by the end of the night, you just might be!
The movie New Year’s Eve turns the holiday into a romantic comedy about a bunch of different couples with intertwining love stories. Find out if Devan and Amy have any romantic New Year’s Eve plans this year.

Amy: Did you see those movies Love, Actually and Valentine’s Day?
Devan: Yeah, those are the ones that had all the intertwining stories of all these different people, right?
Amy: Right. I guess they’re making another one just like that called New Year’s Eve, that’s sort of the same idea. It’s like one night, and all these different couples, sort of seeing how they get together.
Devan: So it’s gonna be like a romantic comedy, since New Year’s eve is such a romantic evening.
Amy: Yeah. I guess it’s a night with a lot of romantic possibilities, considering that you’re supposed to kiss somebody at midnight.
Devan: Yeah, there’s all that anticipation before the countdown to New Year’s, you know, where you’re looking around the room if you’re single, and you’re like, “Who am I gonna kiss at midnight?”
Amy: Yeah. So how do you like to celebrate New Year’s Eve?
Devan: I usually have a really mellow New Year’s Eve. It’s still romantic, usually me and my boyfriend will stay at home and pop a bottle of champagne and watch the ball drop on television, you know. But we try to keep it mellow. I know a lot of people like to go out and go to parties, and get wild and crazy.
Amy: Right.
Devan: But I’m all about the intimate, romantic New Year’s, just with my man.
Amy: Yeah, but then you can’t have the romantic comedy experience of, like, finding your love and, you know, just running into them by coincidence in Times Square or something, and having that first kiss that starts a whole lifetime.
Devan: Wow, that does sound exciting. Maybe I’ll have to break up with my boyfriend before New Year’s.

Discussion
Amy tells Devan about the new movie New Year’s Eve. It is a romantic comedy similar to Love Actually and Valentine’s Day. It tells the stories of several different couples’ experiences on a single night.
Devan thinks that New Year’s Eve is a romantic night. Amy agrees that it has a lot of possibility for romance, since one tradition is to kiss somebody at midnight. Some people like to go to big parties on New Year’s Eve, but Devan prefers to have a quiet, romantic night at home with her boyfriend.
How do you celebrate New Year’s Eve? Do you think New Year’s Eve is a romantic holiday?
