What would your dream house look like? Would there be a pool, a big game room, a beautiful garden? Don’t forget to add a front porch!

Porches look nice on houses, but they’re also useful. You can put a table and chairs on a porch and eat your dinner our there on warm summer nights. Some neighbors can talk to one another from their porches, and a porch can also be used to keep a lookout on the street. Hear Amy and Jeff talk about porches.

Amy:  Do you have a porch on your house, Jeff?

Jeff:  I have a back deck.

Amy:  Hmm. Not really the same as a porch. Not a front porch.

Jeff:  What would your description be of a porch?

Amy:  Oh, you know, like a big covered deck in the front of your house, and you can, you know, go out there, hang out, sit on a porch swing, keep a lookout on the neighborhood. I just love houses with porches. I think they’re so pretty.

Jeff:  Yeah, they’re pretty fun. A lot of porches in college, I remember. A lot of people lived in houses with porches, and they would spend a lot of time out there if the weather was nice enough, or people would smoke usually, step outside.

Amy:  Right. Get a little fresh air.

Jeff:  Yeah.

Amy:  I just think it’s a really great feature for a house.

Jeff:  It is. Oh, actually, I don’t know how this slid by me, but my girlfriend has a large front porch.

Amy:  And do you use it?

Jeff:  Not so much right now because it’s cold out, but in the summertime it’s real nice.

Amy:  Right? I mean, I like a back deck, too, but the nice thing about a front porch is, when it is summertime and multiple houses on the same street all have porches, you can go out there, and while you’re hanging out on your porch, maybe your neighbors are hanging out on theirs, and you can talk across the yards. It’s pretty social, great for parties.

Jeff:  Yeah, it can also get you in trouble though, with parties. People stepping outside, being real loud late at night. They want to hang out on the porch.

Amy:  That’s true.

Amy loves houses with porches. She likes the way they look, and she thinks they are a fun place to hang out, especially if there’s a porch swing.

Jeff agrees that porches can be fun hang out spots. He had a lot of friends in college who lived in houses with porches. His girlfriend lives in a house with a porch, too.

You can eat dinner on your porch, keep a lookout on the neighborhood, or spend time there during a party. But partying on a porch is dangerous, because if the party gets too loud, the neighbors might get upset.

Have you ever lived in a house with a porch? Describe your dream house.

Well, I’m from Brazil and here the houses don’t have front porches.
I think porches are beautiful, they’re very useful, but you won’t have so much privacy anymore…if you wanna throw a party or whatever you’re doing, everybody will see it, so I think this is not good at all… Wink

Sanaz, nice house :) The only thing is left to be a Hollywood Star to live in that house. I’ve seen the similar one, in the magazine, and you know who it belonged to? :) ... to Jason Statham…

Damn! butta that quote got me weak  at the knees, I spilled my coffee all over myself in awe of it.

always know the right words to say. but in reality I do daydream, not too much though.

I once had a girlfriend hehe! she once asked me this “what are your dream, I mean us, what dreams do you have for you and I?”

and my signature blunt and cold answer ” I don’t have dreams, I have plans”

I’m now single, and I didn’t devise a plan B

hahahahah

Snoopy, I agree , the bank will trick you into buying a house that you will have to pay for the rest of your life, with the risk of  losing your job  and  had  your dream house been repossessed by  the bank

good point julito, i’m a nomad myself; I hate to root myself in one place. at the risk of sounding dumb I’d rather rent versus buy a house. I want to go everywhere man.

No dream anything for me this brand new year. I will try to stay grounded in reality, meaning I will only set goals that are realistic. Like for instance I’m looking for a lucrative job and mind you without one, it’s near impossible to get a “dream house”.

But I’d like to point out something about dream house; first a dream house is nothing like Daniel Craig’s film with the same name.

Before you talk about the house per se, there are many other factors you should evaluate. The neighborhood is the first thing to look at, is it safe? What about your neighbors, what kind of individuals are they? What about the previous owners? Because let’s face it! What’s the use of buying a monastery in the middle of a slum or a landfill? Or occupy the home of a former psycho-maniac? Or own the perfect house in a neighborhood infected with child molesters and other felons? We’ve seen it in movies, but it happens in real-life too. I once befriended a guy I later found out was a registered child molester.

Yet again a dream house can be a humble cottage or a high-class mansion; it’s a matter of personal preferences. Some people like the peace of the rural life others opt for the fast-pace of the city. Some people like just adequate space, other like to have rooms crammed with knick-knacks collecting dust and show off to their friends. Well, different strokes for different folks I suppose.

As far as I’m concerned, I never really sit and daydream about what my dream house would look like. But If I were to pick a place to make my home, I will stress on tranquility and safety over everything else. I want to be able to have my midnight jogs and not having to wear a bullet proof vest. I’d love to be able to let in the sun rays without worrying about someone sneaking through my windows.  I’d love to have some waist-high picket fences all around the house. I don’t need a fortress concealed behind high raised walls, and I hate the sight of barbed-wires, I don’t need a moat around my house either. Green well-manicured lawn is a must. Is this daydreaming or what?Laughing

So a self-cleaning Victorian…mmm may I suggest Hogwarts Butta? They provide each new tenant with a complimentary potty-trained puppy that can walk itself. (:

Hmm, dream house, I hope it can has a front porch, also a back deck, and a garden with spacious lawn. I can make parties on the porch, talk with neighbors across yards, and children can play on the garden.Laughing

It will be wonderful to have a dream house of myself.

A house with porch is good but you can only find them in a country house or in a village, the more similar thing in a flat is a terrace or a deck. And if you ask me I’d prefer to live in a city-centre cauze I am pretty young and I enjoy going out, shops, clubs, cafés… and a I find a country house too relaxing for stay all life.

First of all: Best wishes for New Year! I hope it will be better than the previous one :)

My dream house? It’s the house which belongs to me. It can be small, doesn’t have to be spacious and luxury. It has to be warm and cozy.

In my village, we don’t have porches. Because we don’t need them. We have a better place. Every house has a special small place beside, like a house but without walls. We call it “Serender” ı don’t think there is a name for this in English. Anyway, it’s pretty good to hang out in the summertime. We have breakfast, luch and dinner there, sometimes we even sleep there if it’s too hot inside.

Well, when I was younger I wanted a big house, with a pool, a garden, an attic, 4 bedrooms and so on. Who doesn’t want a house like that, huh?

But, now I’ve realized that I don’t need all those things, after all I just want a place of my own. That’s what matters. I want my place to be comfortable and it doesn’t need to be that big, but only big enough to let me have my parents and friends over for dinner without make them feel like they’re in a tuna can.
