TV On The Radio breaks all the rules. They are a rock band that also uses electronic sounds and elements of soul and jazz. You never know what they will do next.

So TV On The Radio fans must have been surprised to see a song called “Will Do” on the band’s new album, Nine Types of Light. “Will do” is a phrase associated with obedience. You say it when you accept an order. In the song, the speaker is saying he will submit to his love. The chorus, “Anytime will do,” means, “Anytime is OK.” If you add “will do” to the end of a sentence, it means whatever you’re talking about will be good enough. But on its own, saying “will do” means, “Yes, I will do that.”

We recently found TV on the Radio drummer Jaleel Bunton out at a bar in Brooklyn, New York, where he lives. We asked him to tell us a little bit more about this song and this phrase, and he said, “Will do!”

Jason:  Welcome to English, baby! I am Jason, here with Jaleel, the drummer for TV On The Radio.

Jaleel:  Howdy.

Jason:  I was hoping you could teach us an English phrase today, and one of your song titles on your most recent album is “Will Do.” Can you tell us about that song?

Jaleel:  That is a catchy phrase. The song is about acquiescence, right? It’s about agreeing to anything no matter what the circumstances or what the repercussions. If I say something, you say, “Will do.”

Jason:  OK.

Jaleel:  If I said, “You wanna come over and we’ll go out and get some pizza pie?”, you’d be like, “Will do!” And then you come on over, and we go and get some pizza pie, and it’s a good time.

Jason:  Alright. So it’s basically something you say when you agree to something.

Jaleel:  Sure.

Jason:  When you agree to do something, specifically.

Jaleel:  Yeah, when you agree to do something.

Jaleel:  English, baby!

TV On The Radio recently released a song called “Will Do.” It’s surprising that a band that likes to experiment with musical styles would name a song after an idiom about following rules and agreeing to another person’s wishes.

But as the band’s drummer, Jaleel Bunton, explains, the song is about agreeing to the wishes of a lover. He says it’s about aquiescence, or making no objection to what you are ordered to do.

The phrase “will do” can be used in casual conversation. Jaleel gives the example of a friend calling to ask you to come over and eat pizza. You could say, “Will do!” and then come over.

Finish this sentence. If someone asks me to __, I will always answer, “Will do!”

If someone asks me to take a walk, I’ll say, “will do”. It’s getting a rarity to walk. Cars, cars, cars. So very often, during my lunch breaks i end up walking alone on the street which is sort of refreshing and good for your muscles but really, the question is, “Where’re the people?”. Just out of curiosity… Anyway, that ” will do” reminded me ” I do” at wedding ceremonies. And the phrase  is very catchy and affirmative. If you said it, it’s like  gonna happen. Gives you sort of confidence.

I like the song “Family tree” from Tv on The Radio. Especially the melody, very calming and relaxing, but what they sing about is difficult to get. If Jaleel would hear my question what the song “Family tree” is about I’d be very grateful. Will do? :))

They are talking too fast. This, actually, could be a problem in any other language when you’re trying to understand.

I used to be the yesman at work, but not anymore. Now I’m very stingy about saying “will do” at work, my colleagues and my boss are very exploiting of my generosity. But I feel a little hint of regret and shame, whenever I turn down their requests, but at the same time I don’t want them to rely on me for everything, It worries me when I’m on vacation and think they just can’t function effectively without me around. So I created a cheat sheet for them, I jotted down all the tips on how to handle possible issues that might arise, basically I no longer give them my fish, I teach them how to fish, it’s working fine. Now I find myself with more downtime, saying less “will dos” and my co-workers have developed a sense of autonomy, as a result.

But outside of work I’m a very obedient and serving  person, when it comes to offering my hands I don’t discriminate., I like when people come  to me and ask for my assistance ,in most situations I’ll gladly bow  and say “I’m honored”, ok ok, without the bowing.Tongue out

I agree with Heather, this phrase conveys a lot of enthusiasm, it’s almost an alternative for “Yes, sure , that would be my pleasure” or “on it”

Yes, this is a great phrase and easy to remember.

A similar phrase that is used in America is “Sure thing!”

Like with The Last Joke’s post below—“If someone asks me to come over and read some books, I will always answer “Will do!”” you can also simply say “Sure thing!”

It’s an affirmative phrase that, like “will do,” conveys a lot of enthusiasm.

Can you pick me up on Saturday to go to the movies?

Sure thing!

Heather, can you pick Mom up some milk at the grocery store?

Sure thing!

Sam, could you go help your grandmother to water her lawn?

Sure thing!
