Few athletes in any sport have as much heart as Grant Hill. He has won the NBA’s sportsmanship award three times. Not only does he score a lot of points, but he is also a great defender.

Grant won the college national championship twice with Duke University. He went on to win the NBA Rookie of the Year award and be one of the best players in the league. But soon, he got injured and struggled to get healthy for several years. After a lot of hard work, Grant is once again a very effective player.

These are all examples of why Grant has heart, but they don’t explain exactly what “heart” means. We asked Grant to teach the meaning of this term at a recent practice.

Jason:  Welcome to English, baby! I am Jason here with Grant Hill. We were hoping you could help us learn the term “heart.” As a slang term, what does it mean?

Grant:  Yeah. I think when you say someone has heart, it means they have determination. They have resolve. They have fight. They’re going to play with a lot of emotion and a lot of energy. You know, those are the type of players, the type of competitors, that you want on your side, guys that have heart. To me, that’s what playing with heart means.

Jason:  You’ve conquered a lot of injuries in your career. Did that take heart?

Grant:  I think so. I think so. It takes the old expression, when you get knocked down, you’re gonna get right back up, and to me, that sort of exemplifies what having heart is all about. You know, it’s not always going to be pretty. It’s not always going to be successful. But you’re gonna have a certain spirit about you, a certain fight about you that even in the midst of adversity and obstacles, you’re gonna still fight through them. When you have that, when you have that kind of resolve, then you have heart.

Jason:  You’re also a great defender. Is heart a part of playing defense too?

Grant:  Yeah. Heart, it’s pride. It’s discipline. It’s taking it personal. On defense, you have to have heart. Rebounding, you have to have heart. There are so many different positions and different facets of the game that require heart, and there are guys in this league who have had long careers, who are considered average players but have figured out a specialty and done it well, and in order to do that, you have to have tremendous heart.

Grant:  Alright, English, baby! Sounds good.

Grant tells Jason what it means to have heart. Someone with heart has determination and spirit. They don’t get upset or discouraged when something is difficult or challenging. They keep fighting and never give up.

Grant is a player with a lot of heart. He has had many injuries during his career, but he never gave up. He worked hard to recover from his injuries and kept playing. He’s had a very long career in the NBA.

When you have heart, you can succeed even when something doesn’t come easily for you. Grant says that some players who don’t have as much natural talent still succeed in the NBA because they have heart.

Who do you know who has a lot of heart? Have you ever overcome a difficult obstacle in your life by having heart?

the most admired people are those who had to face  extreme challenges .A resolute heart and faith in our potential  are door openers  to  achieve our goals in life. There is a saying…” God help to those who help themselves. ”

  To have heart.  : )

You can only predict a positive connotation to that phrase. I think Grant’s words provided some very concise meanings to the phrase, very wonderfully tailored for the English learner’s eardrums.  Not only did Grant’s definition sounded easy to understand but he also made it easy for anyone watching this clip to have some heart, he’s very inspirational.  But Grant’s words are just complement to his display of personality; his demeanor during that relatively short clip and brief flashback about his struggles to get where he’s at right now, can only make you want to pause and say that this guy must have heart. I mean, the guy himself embodies the definition of that phrase. If you’re used to watching NBA and you were to handpick among its most strong-willed players, it would be impossible to leave Grant Hill out.  Grant is a strong player with unyielding determination, add all that to his skills and playmaking abilities you get a Trojan horse for the Phoenix suns, a pet peeve for the opposition, giving up is never his aim. Grant is the ultimate athlete; all his attributes are tightly wrapped around his professionalism and respect for the opponents; he really gives the critics something to scratch their heads about. I don’t know about his personal life but in the world of Basket Ball he has a lot of heart.

But when you read Nakul’s post you really see how rewarding is having a heart. You realize that to have a heart is to have a dream and stick to it, no matter what comes between you and it. When you have a heart you are relentless. You’re hard headed, you never give up, you have this tunnel vision and all you can see is your destination, your dream is the only reality you live by. To have a heart is to make sacrifices, to overcome hardship,; it’s to unburden the heart of remorse and grudge. Another important aspect Naku had made me see is that to have a heart is to be a exemplary icon to others. Others begin to see you as the beacon they rely on to fulfill a predetermined task. So yeah, I believe your father has a big heart, big enough to share it with his family, big enough to inspire others.

Thanks for your enlightening post,

I really hope to see more comments about this lesson, Spill your hearts out  to us people

I like to say, while the words will convince, the example will drag. So it is easy to say follow my words when we don’t give examples (at least nor so good).

To get a heart, in this case, do not mean to have only emotions, but have decision: “I want (and I will) do my best!

Success without effort will not have value.

Joshua 1:1-9.

1After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ aide: 2“Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them—to the Israelites. 3I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses. 4Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates—all the Hittite country—to the Great Sea on the west. 5No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.

6“Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them. 7Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. 8Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. 9Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

May God bless you all

My father has a lot of heart..years ago he started business with his partner and that partner cheated him financially… whatever both of them earned within initial two months, he took away all of them and handed over the company to my father and left no money for him…

he had to restart that business again with no money….he could have sold that company as we already had debt because he had managed those two months having borrowed the things..he didn’t want to sell his company as he loves his work… after this he had to take debt to run that business as business requires money in starting….. work or luck both were not with my father and ultimately we had to sell our home because of heavy debt… but today after around eight years we have been able to set ourselves…we still have debt but I m damn sure that we will get rid of that soon….

Meanwhile I got somethig to learn that none can be believed and we should do on our own… when it was going on, I was also facing obstacles in studies… I and my sister had to lean on limited things… I would like to tell u that we had to tear our books in two parts so that we both could study at one time… we didn’t get tuition too because of having no money that time…. and despite these obstacles… Now I and my family were able to overcome and now we are really happy..

It depends on time actually… one has his own time and he can do what he wants only in that period… so never give up the hope and wait for the ur actual time..  because u will get what is urs… and don’t expect for what’s not urs..

Great interview from Jason. To have heart is  never give up  although  the odds are against us and is  a prominent feature of  a  leader  at large. Grant Hill is one of them and the team he is playing with  is lucky to have this player among them, one that  never  takes  defeat for granted.
