Marni:  Jason, if you could go anywhere in the world this year, travel to any country, any island, anywhere, where would you go?

Jason:  Well, the key is this year, because the place I would go is Cuba, because Cuba is changing so rapidly, and I understand that it’s, in some ways, a time capsule right now. There’s all these old cars and old architecture, and things just really haven’t been updated. So I would love to travel through time, and it seems like going to Cuba is a good way to do that.

Marni:  I couldn’t agree more. Cuba is so high on my list because I think it’s a fascinating place. But this is a huge world and we have so many places we could possibly go. I personally know that I won’t be traveling anywhere out of the country, so I’m looking at more local travel within the United States.

Jason:  You do? How do you know?

Marni:  I’ve got a lot going on already, so I know that I’m gonna be staying local. But I am planning on visiting one of our national parks over the summer.

Jason:  Oh, OK, which one?

Marni:  I’m gonna be going to Yosemite, and I’ve never been there.

Jason:  Yeah, I mean that’s great. But like, I think to me it’s about prioritizing. I want to get to the places that are happening, and that are gonna change. I mean, when you travel somewhere, you’re not just traveling to another place, you’re traveling to that place at a particular time. You only get this little window there, so you have to time your travel just right, I think.

Marni:  There you go, yeah. I think you make an excellent point. Well, I wish you well on your travel adventures.

Jason:  Gracias.

Marni asks Jason where he would go if he could go anywhere in the world this year. He says that this year, he wants to go to Cuba because he thinks it would be a fascinating place to visit right now because of the beautiful architecture and old cars. Jason thinks that Cuba is changing quickly, and he wants to see it before it’s too different.

Cuba is a place Marni would like to visit as well. But this year, she plans to stay a bit more local. She is going to visit Yosemite National Park, in California.

If you could go anywhere in the world this year, where would you go? Do you have any trips planned for 2012 so far?

Alzhbeta. hello,  thanks for your answer. Yes, many students  do that , it gives them the opportunity  to travel and practise the idiom  ,at least I know of two argentine girls that  last year had  worked in a ski-resort in Colorado  for six months , as you say: food and lodge  at no cost ,they had to work a few hours  also for free, but practising along the way   the English  idiom and having a lot of fun.

Fmcetin —Phuket is one of the places I like to see in my lifetime.

I have heard it’s absolutely magical. Of course, the people suffered so much during and after the tsunami that happened in 2004.The tsunami happened as a result of an earthquake in Sumatra which measured 9.1 on the Richter Scale (the scale is used to measure the degree of the earthquake.) Imagine how severe that earthquake was when a 6.3 on the scale is considered to be a STRONG earthquake!! It is recorded at the third largest earthquake experienced in world history. Around 250,000 people died as a result.

From what I hear, there are places to pay respects to the those who lost their lives in Phuket. The people who survived were able to rebuild their beautiful home with billions of aid that came in from around the world.

The sea bears an incredible force. As beautiful as it is, when it turns on us, there is no mercy!

Heather

PS: I have seen some of the footage of the tsunami (on Youtube) and it’s horrifying. An amazing short video people might want to look at is called “Raw tsunami video phuket thailand 2004.” A man happened to have his camera and was able to get some first-hand footage of the waves hitting the land. The water came in so fast.

Alzbeta—Do you mean you’re waiting to see if you’ll be accepted as a volunteer?

You said “excepting,” so I thought I’d check to see if you used the wrong word by mistake. Let me know if you need clarification on this.

The Seychelles look SO blissfullly beautiful. The color of the water is the most beautiful shade of blue. I hear it’s an extremely tranquil place to go on vacation. Oh well, I can always dream! Smile

Wow! So many of are able to travel; you are lucky! It is so expensive to travel these days.  There are so many places I hope to see in my lifetime, though how possible that is…well, I’m not so sure!

The last time I travelled was in December, but it was within my own country. I flew south and stayed in North Carolina for a couple of weeks. My sister is a nurse and she had a terrible fall at work. She broke her back! I had to go and take care of her after her surgery and also take care of my young niece and nephew.

It wasn’t a vacation, of course, but it was refreshing to be somewhere else for a while, and of course I felt blessed that I was able to help my family. Thankfully, I can do my teaching job from anywhere (as long as there is an internet connection), so I have a lot of flexibility.

I have been dreaming of going to different parts of Asia, so if I am ever able to take a trip, I’d plan to visit a few countries on that continent.

I’d also like to see New Zealand and Australia. I really love wildlife, and would take any opportunity to see animals I would never see in New England. Where I live in Maine, it’s easy to see deer and moose.

Hope you are all having a nice weekend!

By the way, in Turkey we make jokes about Patagonia when the things get with simple but confused. e.g. “They couldn’t find the criminal, is it Patagonian army?” Do you have similar jokes? Where the damn Patagonia is :)
