As kids, people used to tell us we were doing a good job all the time. When you did well at school, you got a gold star or an “A+.” And when you behaved well at home, your parents would compliment you and maybe even give you a special reward. But there are no gold stars in the adult world. Instead, if you work hard at your job and do well, you might get a promotion.

When your boss gives you a promotion, you get a new position that typically comes with more responsibilities, a higher salary and a better title. Some companies offer regular promotions, but at other jobs, you have to do something really special to prove that you deserve one. Hear Jeff tell Devan about his recent promotion.

Devan:  Congratulations on your promotion, Jeff, that’s super exciting.

Jeff:  Thanks. I worked pretty hard for it. Put in a lot of time.

Devan:  Yeah, seems like you’ve been moving on up with that company for years, just working your way from the bottom. Do you think that you might eventually be the boss there someday? Is that something that interests you?

Jeff:  I don’t want to say that, but I’m ready for it. I think I can take on the responsibility. I have a lot of new responsibilities now, though, compared to my old position.

Devan:  So, did you get a big raise with your promotion?

Jeff:  Yeah, there was some compensation there. But I wanted to climb up that ladder anyway, on my own. I appreciate the challenge.

Devan:  So you were more concerned with the title than the money?

Jeff:  Not really the title…I mean, that’s all it is, a title.

Devan:  You like the challenge.

Jeff:  I appreciate the challenge, yeah.

Devan:  Well, I’m very happy for you. I think it’s well deserved, and you’re a hard worker.

Jeff:  Thank you. I appreciate that.

Devan congratulates Jeff on getting a promotion. Jeff has been working at the same company for a long time and is climbing the ladder there. He tells Devan that he would like to be the boss there one day. He thinks he could take on the responsibility, and he would like the challenge.

Devan asks Jeff if his promotion came with a raise. Jeff says his new job does come with a higher salary. He also gets a better title. But he says that he is more interested in the challenge of the new job than the title or the money.

Have you ever gotten a promotion at work? Do you hope to climb the ladder at the company you work for?

That’s the problem. Too much information, too much confusing feeling. He was much luckier not getting tempted and concentrated on only one philosophy coming from him and his teachers.

Today we have millions of opinions and we’ve got to be very smart to pick the right one. Plato didn’t crack it. He said happiness is something good that leads to good living. So find out what is good and you’ll be happy :))

Plato is so stone age smart ; )

now we have google and wikipedia. we’ve got the world and knowlegde at our fingertips,

no need to be a loner with scruffy beard in a attic to be smart enough to unravel things.

We are now  cyber smart.

Gobs At the pace your mother is getting promoted, soon, no one in your family will have to work.

My boss told me ” you’ll get a raise when pigs fly”

I said : ” Is  that even possible boss?”

He said ” that’s the point!”

(Joking)

I think if Plato didn’t unravel what is “good”, then what can be asked from me :))

Well, I don’t even work yet so no, obviously I never got a promotion I’m still at school. But yeah, of course I hope to achieve a lot at the company I’ll be working for in the future. It would be great to have my own company. I think getting a promotion can be really inspiring. My mum was promoted a few weeks ago and she’s started to put even more work into getting promoted once again. She’s not stressed or anything, it’s just she likes her job and getting promoted boosted her confidence and showed her what she could become if she only tried slightly harder.

If you’re a good worker, and you’ve been consistent for so many years and your paycheck doesn’t budge . And you’re the one to have to panhandle in the office demanding a raise, something is not right, someone is not doing his job, and For Christ sake! it’s not you…

cold blooded ! : )

you’re lucky he didn’t raise your paystub above his head and say “ here’s your raise, now blow off! , don’t let the door kick you in your rear when you leave”.

But in all seriousness, If you can’t give me a raise I need a rational reason. do I need to work harder? Do I need to attend a seminar? what do I need to get that raise , because obviously I do whatever that’s asked of me?

Snoopy, Many years ago  I thought that it was time to ask for a raise ,so I got into my boss´s office and  and told him: Sir, I need to talk with you about  a raise , Yes, of course, he responded, we can talk  about it for hours  but  that  I will  accept your request is   only in your dreams.  I must have said  a word that you are not suppose to tell your boss, I was fired.  hehehehe

Yeah, one has to wonder!.

good living for me, is living comfortably, being healthy ,meeting people, traveling and  be financially stable, you know just enough to cover the unpredictables events, nothing lavish.

What’s good? , I’ll  leave it to you to unravel , I did  the easier part of your question

Anything what is good and leads to good living should bring happiness. But what is good and good living—it’s all subjective…

You know “commitment” that’s the word I was looking for, but it had slipped my mind.

yeah, but the key word remains passion, if you’re not happy doing it, why do it in the first place?

Case in point, I know people who have both Math and Language skills well developed( though language skills a little bit stronger) and they work as an accountant and are very inquisitive and interested in many things, always excited by sth.Read a lot. Very developed mind! Bit it’s rare though. You’re one of them! :)

Ola33, yeah I get that a lot, people come to me  and ask me “Is that really what you want to do?”.they think I don’t have the traits of an accountant in me. :)

I love it, they say accounting is the language of business, right? ; ) . But you’re right i love languages too.

Snoopyboy, an accountant is a very demanding profession, though, I’m surprised that it’s going to be your future career. You’re so linguistic mind, like “genius on steroids” ;) though in our fast speed high-tech society, multitasking is taking over. And I bet, being an account, will always make you financially independent and plus, will bring more free time to be self-imployed and the only promotion will be money compensation from the reliable and wealthy clients. Wink

Promotion according to Snoopy Tongue out

You would think I get a promotion every week. At work, my responsibilities keep piling up, my presence is crucial and whenever I take a day off or coming back from a usually short vacation, there’s always a mound of mess I need to polish. I’m the go-to guy, the yes-sayer, the ultimate multi-tasker, I’m the people-pleaser , I’m the generosity that gets abused repeatedly. I’m not trying to sound conceited but I really believe I’m the rock of my department yet I don’t get any credits, no acknowledgements from my boss. Last time I asked for a raise, he looked at me with crazy eyes like I had 17 heads. You ask me: but Snoopy, why not look for something else, another job? The world economic crisis is the prime excuse cutthroat employers use whenever you come up to them with salary concerns. And if you think you deserve more, they suggest the exit door, behind which, thousands of applicants are waiting to replace you. In a more professional way, they tell you “you should be glad you have a job, lad”. So yeah, I feel like I’m getting promoted, I feel like I have earned upper-management’s trust, I feel like I’m being assigned some duties that are more serious, I even feel as if I’m overseeing other co-workers, it feels like a promotion but I don’t feel like my work is rewarded at all. I’ve been treading water for almost 3 years now with this job. Promotions 4 – Commissions 0. : )

It’s not about glass ceiling, it’s not even about hard work anymore whether you get a promotion or not. I think there are two main factors that are favorable in getting a promotion. One is dedication and passion in whatever you do. Dedication basically means you are fully committed and take your job assignments very seriously. Dedication has to come from you, it’s cannot be imposed to you, it’s a characteristic any employee thriving for success, must cultivate. If passion were a gaslight, dedication would have been the fuel it needs for its flame to take hold. Being passionate is being dedicated in a joyful way, at work, it’s taking pride and pleasure in what you do. When you work passionately you become more aware and concerned, as a result, everything you do is done with the upmost care. But even with such qualities you are not guaranteed a promotion, if your immediate supervisor isn’t considerate. Sure the economic situation makes it difficult for employers to compensate workers deservedly, but it’s not always about money. I think there are other ways to reward an employee that has proved to be consistently efficient and dedicated in doing his job. A promotion is just a title if it doesn’t bring about perks like more days off, recognitions, overtimes, and less trivial tasks. Those things mean a lot to employees; and if money is not timely available, those gestures and privileges are rewarding alternatives, encouraging enough to keep the good worker persistent. A good manager is someone that values his employees and always rewards them, with words when time is hard and with a raise in salary when the situation permits.

A little off road but, I see people working their socks off to try to impress a boss and cling that promotion they crave, to no avail. Working hard is just a lowly saber rattling effort  if you’re heart is not in it. If you don’t have the dedication and passion all the money and promotion in the world, won’t make your day at work more enjoyable, or even your life.  My aim is to become a successful accountant, well that would certainly attract a lucrative paycheck, but it would still have been a pain to wake up every day and go to work and not enjoying it. No, I want to be an accountant because career wise, that’s my passion and if it can generate wealth, that’s just another feather on my cap.

Speaking of Promotion , I think those Spammers need one too.  They need their own website and headquarter, a place where they can post freely and not have their stupid offers being reported  and deleted. That’s what spammers dream about.

Oops, I accidently hit the report button twice, thrice, sorry spammers, you’re fired
