St. Patrick’s Day is an Irish holiday. But in the US, we’ll take any excuse to party. Although there are many people whose families came here from Ireland, you don’t have to be an Irish immigrant to celebrate St. Paddy’s Day, American-style. Just make sure you remember to wear green. Otherwise, you might get a pinch. Hear Devan and Jeff talk about their St. Patrick’s Day plans.

Devan:  So what are you doing for St. Patrick’s Day this year, are you gonna go out and drink green beer?

Jeff:  Nothing.

Devan:  Nothing? Really? You’re not gonna wear all green and get a party hat and wear a shamrock and get wasted at an Irish pub?

Jeff:  No. No pubs, no pints, no parades. It’s just a kinda cheesy American thing to make a buck.

Devan:  You think it’s just commercialized here?

Jeff:  Yeah. Just like a bunch of…well, every other major holiday here.

Devan:  You’re such a party pooper, Jeff. If I see you on St. Patrick’s Day, and you’re not wearing green, I’m gonna pinch you.

Jeff:  I’m a party animal, not a party pooper. Just not on St. Paddy’s Day.

Devan:  You’re still getting pinched.

Devan asks Jeff about his St. Patrick’s Day plans. He says he isn’t going to do anything on St. Patrick’s Day. He thinks it is an overly commercialized holiday, and he doesn’t like to celebrate it.

Devan, on the other hand, enjoys St. Patrick’s Day. She likes to go to a pub and drink green beer. In some US cities, there are big parades on St. Patrick’s Day.
It’s also common for people to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day. In fact, if you don’t wear green, you might get a pinch. Devan calls Jeff a party pooper and says that she is going to pinch him if she sees him on St. Paddy’s Day without any green.

Is St. Patrick’s Day celebrated in your country? If you see someone who isn’t wearing green on St. Paddy’s Day, will you pinch them?

In Argentina St.Patrick´s Day is not a holiday  buy is widely celebrated by young people ( a good excuse to go to a pub  and  have some bear  and fun ) , also to practice  the english  that they have so far learned .We  have     tourists from  English speaking countries, a good opportunity to test how far they have advanced with the english idiom.

No, not here in Brazil, but we have a lot of holidays, like “The day of Zumbi dos Palmares”. Zumbi was a brazilian slave leader who fights for his freedom.

It’s well celebrated here by Irish, I think. If you’re not Irish, you can join too, if you live nearby the Irish community and see everyone is rushing to the pub for a green beer. So you just keep the company and sit in the corner eating french fries and hamburger sipping with beer and watching how people go banannas. No nightmares :)
