Sometimes it’s hard to imagine how we ever survived without our cell phones. We don’t just depend on them to keep in touch with our friends and family. More and more, we depend on them to keep us entertained, too.
Mobile games can be a great way to pass the time when you’re stuck on a plane or bus, or when you’re waiting in a long line. Some mobile games, like “Angry Birds” and word games that you can play online with friends, have become an obsession that people play even when they should be doing something else. Hear what games Marni and Amy can’t stop playing on their cell phones.

Amy: I’ve been playing this game on my cell phone, Words with Friends. It’s like a word game.
Devan: I’ve heard that’s really popular. That’s the one that got Alec Baldwin in trouble on the plane, right?
Amy: I think it is. And it’s getting me in trouble. Last night as I was falling to sleep, I was seeing it in my mind, like behind my closed eyes. I was seeing the game. I think I’m addicted.
Devan: So why do you play these mobile games? Do you just play them to pass the time?
Amy: Yeah. I feel like cell phone games start out as something to do when you’re just on the bus or something like that, and then they become an addiction.
Devan: Do they distract you from your work when you’re at the office? Do you ever find yourself playing on your computer or on your cell phone when you’re supposed to be working on projects?
Amy: Well, right now I’m playing a game of Words with Friends with my boss, so I guess it’s acceptable.
Devan: Well, then he knows what you’re up to, I guess.
Amy: What about you? What games do you like to play on your cell phone?
Devan: I really like playing Angry Birds. I think that one’s super addictive.
Amy: Oh yeah. I was into that one for a while, but then I moved on.

Discussion
Amy tells Devan that she thinks she is addicted to playing games on her cell phone. She loves playing the word game Words with Friends so much that she recently found herself thinking about it as she was falling asleep. The actor Alec Baldwin recently got in trouble for refusing to turn off his cell phone on an airplane because he wanted to keep playing this same game.
Devan asks Amy why she likes playing mobile games. Amy says they are a fun way to pass the time when you can’t do anything else. But they can become distracting if you play them too much, especially if you play them at work. Luckily, Amy’s boss likes to play mobile word games too!
What games do you like playing on your cell phone? Do you think mobile games are too distracting?
