You have a five-page paper due tomorrow, and you haven’t even started it yet. What should you do? It would be so easy to look online for an essay related to your topic. You could buy somebody else’s paper, or just copy down some information from Wikipedia. But you’d better think twice before you cut corners like this. Plagiarism can get you into some serious trouble.

Plagiarism is copying someone else’s words or ideas without giving them proper credit in your essay. In most schools in the US, if you get caught plagiarizing, you’ll automatically get an F on the paper and might fail the course as well. Some students have even gotten kicked out of school for plagiarizing. Hear two teachers, Marni and Amy, talk about plagiarism.

Amy:  You’re a teacher, Marni, have you ever had to deal with plagiarism from one of your students?

Marni:  Yeah, somewhat. I think the hardest thing is, or what I struggle with, is letting kids know how serious it is. It’s like, you know, with the onset of the internet and how readily available all this information is, that idea of, you know, you need to put your thoughts into your own words versus copying what you get off the internet, I think it’s harder and harder for them.

Amy:  Definitely. And it almost seems to them like not cheating, or not plagiarizing, if they’re doing it off the internet. Like I think a book is somehow more sacred than something you just find on some random website. But it’s definitely a big problem among my students. And I think it is really serious, but I also think it’s particularly taken really seriously here, in this country.

Marni:  Just in the United States?

Amy:  I think a little more so here. We have such strict rules about how you have to quote things, and you have to cite them, and you have to use a very particular citation style and format. But what do you think is an appropriate punishment for plagiarizing? Should a student be kicked out of school, or should they just fail the assignment or fail the class?

Marni:  You know, failing the assignment seems to me like an appropriate reaction. Also, if that’s a recurring problem, then we need to figure out a way to teach kids to take information, and then how are they going to put it in their own words.

Amy:  It’s definitely a lot more work not to plagiarize.

Marni:  It’s true, it really is.

Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Marni and Amy are both teachers. Amy asks Marni if she’s ever had a problem with one of her students plagiarizing. Students of Marni’s have plagiarized before. Marni thinks it’s important to teach kids why they shouldn’t plagiarize and help them understand how to avoid it.

Marni says that it can be difficult not to plagiarize, when so much information is so readily available to us on the internet. Some students don’t realize it when they’re using someone else’s ideas, or don’t know how to put someone else’s ideas in their own words.

Is plagiarism taken very seriously in your country? How can students avoid plagiarizing?

I agree with Ola, making mistakes is part of the process of learning, we can easily avoid missspelling a word and thats is what dictionaries are for ,to ensure us that a word is  correctly spelled. Grammar is tricky  and we need practice and reading a lot in english ,then gradually we will know when  we are  wrong.  I agree with Mnal  that helps not to be in a rush  ,we should read an reread  our commentaries before  making a “click” ,we will be amazed at how many times  a correction is necessary.

Mnal_F, but in general, not to discourage from posting, I think any writings ( mistakes or not mistakes ) is welcome. The first thing in learning English is to be relaxed. It sometimes stops you from further chirping when somebody’s asking you ” Where are you from?” “What accent is that?”. Thank God, it’s less and less. The same is in writing. Starting with mistakes and they will be gone eventually, but the key is not to stop - post! That’s what the comments are for. And you never know, what a mistake was that - because of the lack of knowledge or done by negligence.

Plagiarism is very unethical and all schools and university around the world are suffering from this matter. In my country are not flexible in such things. The problem is in new generation more eligible of using high tech devices for such things. Although there is a special program to peruse any copy paste essays or researchs

I wanted to say the same mnal_ F! To read what you’ve written as for grammar and spelling mistakes and maybe to read 3 times or more. Always in a hurry, ’ running a marathon’’.:) and then to post it!

Hi FeiFei21,

My name is Heather. I am female. Perhaps you thought I am a guy because my hair is short? I’m not sure. Anyhow, I am a teacher/tutor; hence, my name is TutorHeather.

Oh yes, I have had a lot of students from China. I have had students from all over Asia, the Middle East, Russia, South America, etc.

Do you have a specific question in terms of your English? You asked about my insight into Chinese students’ problems with the language. Of course, it varies from person to person, although there may be some common structural errors.
In terms of suggestions for learning, it simply takes time and hard work. I always tell my students when they become frustrated that learning a language is a marathon and not a sprint.

There are many, many ideas. What are you doing now to improve your English?

Heather :)

Well, at school plagiarism isn’t a big topic, no. But a german politician plagiarized a while ago and was fired. So in certain cases it is taken seriously. Well duh…, students can avoid plagiarizing by just getting their work done when it is given and writing their own texts on it lol. That would be my advice.

OK. That is what I want to avoid, but I am always here to help. I know so many people want to learn better English, but may not be able to pursue direct help for whatever reason.

I love when someone provides me with information that  helps me fix my errors (especially when I know it’s coming from a kind, supportive place and not an unkind one), but not everyone else appreciates unsolicited ( not asked for) help. I don’t see it as a “correction,” but merely as a way to gather more information that helps us all pursue our life goals.

I will keep watching replies, but thanks for input thus far. This is exactly why I asked.

Take care, all!

I think it’s individual— if a person asks a question as for the grammar correction or the correct usage of the phrase then it’s ok, if not, it can discourage his/her furthur posting since some are sensitive for being corrected in public.

Thanks for offering your help, Heather!

Great idea, Heather. This way ESL learners will be able to learn on their own mistakes.

Hi everyone!

I am just dropping to check out the newest lesson and read through people’s replies, which are – as always – so interesting. As a teacher, I am truly invested in this particular topic.

I have a question for the entire community. As you have probably noticed, even though I keep a busy schedule I love to answer English questions whenever I can.

So, for those who post here, do you want tips on your English or to see some corrections on your postings? I don’t want people to feel that I am picking on them or not valuing the content of the response.

My profession is teaching English; however, I am also just a person who simply enjoys reading the contributions. I am happy, however, to pick some examples throughout the postings to demonstrate the best possible English.

Just let me know!

Heather

Ryo, totally agree.

If I were a teacher, I would do the same thing by paying attention at the students who might need more help than the others and not being able to accomplish an assignment on their own. In reality, it’s not like that. They’re expelled or not given a pass or asked to leave the classroom. Nobody cares when a drowning man catches at a straw as cheating;)

Unfortunately , The plagiarism has became a big issue in our lives , We suffer from it everywhere , I think It.s depends on your ethics , If you have a good moral , you never think about the plagiarism .

Actually plagiarizing is spared between the children more than ordinary people , In my country Really we have plagiarism without any courtesy .

I guess we should teach kids the plagiarism against religion and culture , In my opinion when you take thoughts of others and try copy it to yourself really this is a big shame , you should respect efforts others .

when we were students Really we had a lot of the plagiarism between each other .

I want to talk about myself , I had some of the plagiarizing with my buddy who were sitting near to me , when I was a students .

I am here for learning English Language I didn’t allow to myself copy any words from other words and add it to myself , I prefer to commit of mistake more than to be my appearence is wonderful ,or hear some nice words from others you are very good man ,never I don’t like to be cheater .

We need a wider campaign to struggle and fight the plagiarism between us .

by the way we should try to find an approparite new ways to teach the people and children both , How we can facing this problems .

ah plagiarism is not something new, we even have special saying about it “Assignment? Don’t get upset! Just copy paste! ” :D , I don’t know guys, some of professors seem to be agree with it, for example they give assignment in very short of time, it is like asking us to quickly search in the internet to get the things done. Anyway it is quite the same you know, in Indonesia if anyone copying other people’s work, we call them “plagiat”

Plagiarism becoming the biggest issue in the college students. It gets high rate as a bad student’s habit . In my country , plagiarism known as ’’ copy paste ’’ , it isn’t something strange or taboo to talk about, because it rooting as a culture and very common happen in university life. Mostly students plagiarize due to catch up with assignments in a short time. As a student I had to admit of course I did my research by accessing the internet rather than flipping up every page of my book. hehehe…....But as far as I know by copying and editing, the idea will get more complicated and my works were getting alot. It is important to know the exact source and the idea from the article and then try to put them in our own words. As an educated student we cannot just being underachiever, receiving everything in packets and swallow it immediately. I’m sure it will difficult to digest. I don’t like the idea of plagiarism though, as we know that the old time students used to develop knowledge by inventing new idea and critical thinking , but now we are in the process of being fooled by technology….. O,o

China

In China, plagiarism does happen in some fields.  A lot graduate students and scholars take someone else ideas and use them without any notes. I have graduated. When I look back my graduation thesis, I shold say I searched a lot information from the Internet and use them in my article. I wrote notes for some of them but not for all. But the main idea is mine. Even so many guys think it wrong,  they would still to do. They feel one way but their action says another. We should pay attention to this question. why?

As so many students graduated from school every year, the quality and the level of the graduation thesis seems they can not pace up with the world’s development. In China, many guys critics that our students lack of creativity and they forget the current examination-oriented system should be mostly be responsible for that. Although the system exists so much problem and need to be improved, I should say this system give many ordinary guys more choices like me.

So the same question may have different causes in different countries. We should know this problem more detailed. We are on the way.
