Even though some of the most beautiful things ever written in the English language were written as poetry, it’s hard to find many Americans today who frequently read poetry. Maybe it reminds them of a hated high school English teacher, or they think they just aren’t deep enough to understand it. Maybe poetry seems boring, stuffy, or old fashioned to them. Yet great poetry, if given the chance, can be as exciting to read as a great song is to listen to. Hear Jason and Amy’s thoughts about reading poetry.

Amy:  Do you read poetry, Jason?

Jason:  No. I read so much poetry as an English major in college that I just haven’t developed an appetite for it yet.

Amy:  That’s funny, because I was an English major, but I somehow got away with hardly reading any poetry at all.

Jason:  What? Really?

Amy:  I mean, I took a couple classes, but I was always reading more novels and stories. I’ve always been a little afraid of poetry.

Jason:  What’s scary about it?

Amy:  Well, it just seems like you might not get it, you know?

Jason:  Yeah.

Amy:  But lately I’ve been reading more, and I’m so into it. I love poetry.

Jason:  What’s your favorite?

Amy:  Well, I’ve been reading some contemporary stuff, but then I’ve also been reading a lot of Emily Dickinson.

Jason:  Oh, I was going to say, if you’re worried about not understanding the poetry, you could just read poetry that nobody understands, like Emily Dickinson.

Amy:  Yeah. I mean, a really good poem is great because you can kind of partly understand it, or different people can understand it in different ways. You know, there isn’t one right answer.

Amy asks Jason if he likes to read poetry. Jason says that he read so much poetry in college, he isn’t interested in reading it now. Amy was an English major in college like Jason, but she did not read a lot of poetry. Recently, she has become more interested in poetry.

Amy says that she used to be scared of poetry. She worried that she wouldn’t understand it or would interpret it incorrectly. But now she realizes that poetry can mean different things to different people. There is more than one “right answer” when it comes to poetry.

Do you like reading poetry? Describe your favorite poem.

BTW, guys! Why haven’t anyone mentioned yet poetry doesn’t always mean such a hackneyed lovestories! There’s a load of hugely sophisticated lyrics on freedom, sense of life, firmness of one’s views, etc. Russian-speaking guys must recognize this poem that has been among my favourite onesWink

LISTEN

Listen,

if stars are lit

it means – there is someone who needs it.

It means – someone wants them to be,

that someone deems those specks of spit

magnificent.

And overwrought,

in the swirls of afternoon dust,

he bursts in on God,

afraid he might be already late.

In tears,

he kisses God’s sinewy hand

and begs him to guarantee

that there will definitely be a star.

He swears

he won’t be able to stand that starless ordeal.

Later,

He wanders around, worried,

but outwardly calm.

And to everyone else, he says:

‘Now,

it’s all right.

You are no longer afraid,

are you?’

Listen,

if stars are lit,

it means – there is someone who needs it.

It means it is essential

that every evening

at least one star should ascend

over the crest of the building.

Come on! who’s the author?Laughing

The poem I composed when my kid wanted something on Pollution for school assignment..

Stop Pollution

enjoy delusion…. but stop pollution

injured badly from crust to the core

cant bear it.. the earth any more

no room now to delay solution

march on to seed another green revolution

mother nature blesses us the utmost care

blooming flowers & trees… pure water & air

forget not our duty to it.. to be just and fair

wise up rise up to save the ozone layer

do enjoy delusion… but must stop pollution

All are the nature’s charming creation… beauties such as Sun, Moon and Vegetation…

Another warming sensation out comes Poetry as human’s imagination stirs his passion….

The words and the synonyms….. the vocabulary and the rhymes….

The placement is all magic…. giving way to the music… producing some beautiful kick…

That the ears feel the sweet… the heart goes upbeat…....

Agonies take the back seat….and life and beauty complete their meet…….

Beauty, nature, flower, valor et al every thing finds place in its composition….

Power is so much …that it also becomes anthem of a nation….

I apologize for my comment here, because it is off topic. Comment is not about poetry.

I’m going to talk about actors because I have to reply to the question I’ve been asked.

I will start from phrase: “I like real people with real character and appearance. I never had a habbit to fall in love with photo of singer or actor  even in my hot teens ;)”

Snoopy, just out of the interest and for the sake of fun let me see your address book  please.

I want  to point out  which actor I would like you to connect me with.

Here goes

Danny DeVito – excellent actor, funny and with kind heart but “NO” sorry

Sylvester Stallone – he may be everything I like. He is strong, brave, handsome, but the type of his temper is not the one I would prefer. So, “No” as well.

Jacky Chan, Bruce Lee ….  -  “NO” without any explanations

Daniel Craig, Samuel Jackson, Denzel Washington  – “NO” as well

Brad Pitt – hmmmmmm, he is good looking especially in the movie “Troy”…. so handsome, strong, powerful, sexy but  “NOT now”. You will connect me with him later on. ;)

Snoopy, as I can see your address list is not long. Out of the digits you have got in your address book dial please pilot John Travolta and Will Smith. :)

Look carefully may be you will find the numbers  of Tom Hanks, Alec Baldwin, Jack Nicholson, Antony Hopkins and Mickey Rourke. They are the firm “YES” especially  Antony Hopkins, Tom Hanks and Alec Baldwin. I’m craving to talk to them. :D :D :D

Thanks for the connection Wink

Dearest Lesya, traditionally the celebration of Victory Day began in the Eternal Glory park where flowers were laid  on a grave of unknown soldiers. The members of government congratulated  veterans. After that all the veterans were invited to a big concert. There was also a parade of the military hardware.

The celebration finished with an impressive fireworks. Our veterans were proposed to eat some front-line kasha and to drink a jigger of vodka  just as it was during the war. The veterans were also proposed a ride on  a motor ship. It’s a pity that the weather was not  so good today, even cold.

1.800.000 veterans are  in Ukraine by now.

They are all deserve love and respect of Ukrainian people.

I agree with Amy. Different people can understand a great poem differently and it’s maybe one of the characteristics of the art in general. If everyone gets same feeling and same idea from a poem, it would be more a journalistic text than poetic one.

Then, I’d like to share one of my favourite contemporary poems with you:

Cake

i wanted one life
you wanted another
we couldn’t have our cake
so we ate eachother.

Of course, especially the poems and poets of the european romanticism, but also poets from other literary movements. I have many favourite poems like “Die Stille” by Rainer Maria Rilke, “Mir ist zu Licht um zu schlafen” by Achim von Arnim, “Waldfrevel” by Wilhelm Busch, “Gefunden” by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, “Remember” by Christina Rossetti,  ”Sensation” by Arthur Rimbaud, “Correspondances” and ”Élévation” by Charles Baudelaire, “Ed è subito sera” by Salvatore Quasimodo, “Il sabato del villagio” and “La quiete dopo la tempesta” by Giacomo Leopardi…so it’s really hard to describe them all!!!

Ola,

This sounded like mnemonic poetry, more than anything

:)

Ochestra I have never seen a “Romeo and Juliet” play. So I don’t know too much about the original plot; but I have seen the Hollywood  film with the same name, when I saw its  poster ,I could tell it wasn’t any of Shakespeare work  : ). Or it could have been that Shakespeare was wayyy ahead of his time…
