A sister can be your best friend. Sisters who are close love to share secrets, and sometimes even clothes.

But sisters can also become enemies. Jealousy and sibling rivalry can put a strain on sisters’ relationship. Some sisters compete for their parents’ attention; others compete for friends or achievements at school. Hear Devan tell Mason about her relationship with her sister.

Mason

Devan: I have an older sister, and I feel like we have this constant sibling rivalry going on. Do you have a sister?

Mason: I have a younger sister. I don’t know, I feel like there’s obviously some stereotypical differences between brothers and sisters, and two sisters, right?

Devan: I think so. I think that, you know, when…like with me and my sister, there’s a lot of jealousy maybe sometimes, because if she has a boyfriend and I don’t or she’s getting better grades than me, there’s a lot more comparisons to be drawn there. And also it’s harder for me too, I think, being the younger one, because I’m supposed to be like her. She’s supposed to be the role model.

Mason: Now, has that relationship evolved over time? Like is there still that element of rivalry but you guys are also really close, or has it kind of stayed antagonistic?

Devan: No, I think that the older we get, the more she’s evolved into my best friend, whereas before, she was my enemy.

Devan has an older sister. Even though they are close, there is still a rivalry between them. Mason has a sister, too, but she is younger than him and they do not have any sibling rivalry. Mason thinks there may be more jealousy and competition between two sisters than between a sister and a brother.

Devan agrees. She says it is also difficult being the younger sister, because she feels like she is supposed to be just like her older sister. Her older sister is supposed to be the role model, and Devan is supposed to follow her example.

Even though there is still some rivalry between them, Devan and her sister are no longer enemies. In fact, now they are more like best friends.

Sibling rivalry is a type of competition or animosity among children, blood-related or not. The sibling bond is often complicated and is influenced by factors such as parental treatment, birth order, personality, and people and experiences outside the family.

My elder sister and I spent more time together during childhood than we do with our parents. Our rivalry happened throughout childhood and lessened over time. Like other families those have more than one child, from a young age, we were sensitive to differences in parental treatment and fighting with each other as a way to get parental attention.

Parenting plays an important part in the harmonization between children in a family. The way parents interact and behave with their children is a major cause of why their children interact and behave the way they do.

We are lucky to have a reasonable mother who always knew how to solve the dispute between my sister and me when we were young. Until now when I am old enough to know how to treasure the love with my sister, I feel the need to thank our parents for having given birth to not only her or me but both of us so that we can enjoy the special sibling bond.

Now when we grow up, marriage may drives us apart, but the in-law relationship is so good that now sometimes I believe instead of having only one sister, now I have two more brothers (who actually are my husband and my brother in law.)

Oh, how I wish my sister were here so that I can give her a big tight hug.

I don´t have a sister and I´ve never wondered if it´s good or not, it´s just fate. But I think that friends can be like brothers and sisters, and if you´re lucky, there´s less jealousy and envy.

However, I now a lot sisters who´re really fond of each other and it doesn´t matter whether they´re really different or very alike. So that doesn´t seems to be the point.

But as pleasant as it might seems for an non-participant sometimes, I just can´t imagine a sister realtionship without any of those poor elements (jealousy etc.). So if I´d have the choice, I prefered a brother ;)
