Blimey! The Olympics are in London this year, mate. That makes it a perfect time to start using your favorite British English expressions, as you enjoy a nice warm glass of ale at your favorite pub.

London is a city that’s rich with history and traditions. And from their food to their humor, the British people are a unique bunch. They may speak the same language as Americans, more or less, but that definitely doesn’t mean their culture is the same. Hear Mason and Amy talk about their favorite aspects of London and the UK.

Amy:  Are you excited about the Olympics being in London this year?

Mason:  I mean, I’m excited about the Olympics in general, I think. I didn’t really pay much attention to, like, them being in London or not. But I’m sure that’ll be awesome.

Amy:  Have you ever been to England or to London?

Mason:  I’ve been a couple times to London. And last time I was there, I did a tour of the Tower of London, and apparently, there was one time that they were housing the Olympics in there, and they thought they would do maybe some of the swim races in the moat, which is a terrible idea, because that was basically the bathroom for the entire Tower of London. So they ruled that out.

Amy:  Oh man. See, I love that about London. There’s just so much history there, and so many crazy stories like that. It’s different from the US, where, you know, we just have such a shorter history.

Mason:  Absolutely. It establishes a really interesting dynamic over there.

Amy:  Yeah. There’s so many great traditions, and just, sort of cultural things that everyone knows, like the British sense of humor and the ale and gross food and all that kind of stuff.

Mason:  I don’t know that anyone is really happy about the gross food, to be fair.

Amy:  That’s true.

Mason:  And it is gross. Are you listening, England? Your food is totally gross.

Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Mason is excited about the Olympics. Amy reminds him that they are in London this year. He thinks that could make them even more fun.

Mason has been to London twice. He likes London for its rich history and traditions. Amy points out that England has a much longer history than the US, which she thinks makes it a very interesting place.

The British are known for many things, including their dry sense of humor and their pubs. Some of the things they’re known for aren’t great. For example, their cuisine is considered far from delicious. Mason dislikes British food, but he loves London.

Have you ever visited London? What do you think England is best known for?

I’ve never been to London, unfortunately. Of course, I’d like to visit this alluring city. London is famous with many places of interest you were talked about while learning English, reading special literature, surfing on the I-net  or just watching TV.

All of us are aware that English  humour is very specific thing and not funny at all.I don’t agree with that opinion. I have a few British friends, and we talk almost every day. One of my friends  is a very clever man with absolutely amazing sense of humour. Now I changed my mind about English people. They are intelligent and  very good interlocutors. I think English humour is very subtle.

I’ve never been to London, therefore I think it’s hard to talk about this so highlighted city. All that I know about London comes from what I heard of, read on the internet and also from what some of my friends who have already been there before talked to me about. There are some features that can be cited, though. The accent, I guess, is the most noticed characteristic which London is most famous for, following that, I think punctuality holds second spot in the rank of features that make London so well-known. So far I know, time is the must for british people in general.

What I know  about England in general is that their accent is quite different to American’s, so it sometimes makes it difficult to understand English people when we’re generally  exposed to American english. Anyways, independently of their gross food or bad sense of humor, I consider that this is a country with lots of interesting things to know about. I’d definitely like to be there someday!

Swim races in the moat. Really gross! Who they’re gonna compete with? With crocodiles? Or this is an English humor. I didn’t even know they still have a moat. Thanks for warning ;)

I’ve never been to London, but I’ve talked a lot to British. For me they’re fun people :), as I’m for them a total alien! I’m a chatterbox and can talk non-stop on any topic. For an Englishman it’s inappropriate to strike a conversation with a stranger unless you’re destined to spend some time with each other sitting in a café or any other places. You can sit for hours hypnotizing each other without uttering a single word, but someone should break the ice and it’s me!  If you compliment about their car, you’re safe. The ice has melted and your reserved companion starts talking!, but it’s better not to change the subject for something like private ( job, family, even economy) if you don’t want to spend another 15 minutes in silence. Switch to gardening, cats and dogs – they love it! Don’t expect to be the centre of attention, just get the role of the smart reporter and you’ll be the best buddy, indeed ))

I visited England in 2.000. I enjoyed my stay there very much. I think it´s best known for its history, pubs, theatre, just like Mason put it. And yes, I had first hand experience with British food. But I think their culinary has been changing.
