Billions of people lived and died before you were born. It’s strange to think about isn’t it? All of those people whose lives helped shape the world we live in are gone. What is our connection to them?

For some, traditions provide a valuable connection to the past. It can be rewarding to do the same things that your parents did, and their parents, and their parents, and so on. A tradition can be as simple as celebrating a holiday in a particular way or as big learning a particular occupation.

Traditions aren’t just a connection to the past. They are also a connection to the future. If you continue a tradition or even start one of your own, people many years from now will have you to thank for it. Listen to Amy and Mason talk about traditions.

Mason:  Funny enough, I don’t have many traditions.

Amy:  Do you think it’s fun to have traditions, or do you purposely not have traditions?

Mason:  I mean, the ones that I do keep I love dearly. So, like, every year I sit down with my friends and I watch all the Lord of the Rings movies back to back.

Amy:  That’s very nerdy.

Mason:  In one day.

Amy:  Wow.

Mason:  And it’s awesome. I will do that forever. Best tradition anyone’s ever had. But outside of that, there’s not really a whole lot.

Amy:  It’s kind of funny, because once you get married, you sort of start to think about, “What are our family traditions gonna be?” It seems like a lot of…Like, within in a family, you start those traditions more, like for your kids and stuff like that.

Mason:  Sure. A lot of traditions very quickly can become like, ugh, I’m doing this because I have to. It’s kind of a chore, rather than something you look forward to and you want to kind of keep participating in.

Amy:  It’s true. We should just destroy all those old traditions. Out with the old, in with the new.

Mason:  Maybe there needs to be an evaluation period for traditions. Like every three to five years you need to do a review period and sit down and say, like, “Hey, this tradition’s not really working out for us anymore. We’re gonna have to let you go.”

Amy:  I like that.

Mason tells Amy that he does not have many traditions. One tradition he does have is a little unusual. He and his friends watch all of the Lord of the Rings movies back to back each year. Amy thinks this sounds like a fun but dorky tradition.

Amy recently got married, and she says that once a couple gets married, they start developing their own traditions. Most traditions that people have come from their families. They might be traditions that they started with their parents when they were kids and have continued to keep up as adults.

Mason thinks that some traditions are too much of a burden. He says people keep up some traditions because they feel like they have to, not because they really want to. He thinks we should all reevaluate our traditions every few years and decide whether or not we really want to keep them going.

What are some of the traditions that you and your family observe? Do you have any traditions that you don’t really enjoy anymore?

qat

Sister ( Laila Ali ) :Whoever knows Yemen, certainly knows about Qat. In case you don’t know what
it is,

Chewing of qat is a tradition in Yemen or a purely social . In Yemen , chewing Qat starts after lunch, the main meal of the day. Lunch is often large but hasty, eaten quickly to line the stomach for an afternoon’s chewing. Qat chewing mostly occurs in private homes, with all in attendance bringing their own qat. Sometimes people sit in a sunlit living-room at the top of Yemeni homes …you can also see some people are chewing qat in the street or at work. Merchants chew qat in their shops or stalls, drivers and their passengers in their cars, and afternoon workers at their job sites. , men often chain-smoke cigarettes. Chewing Qat will last at least five hours. chewing people force new people to participate in qat chews. If they do not chewing, they will be labeled as social outcasts.

dagger

Sister ( Laila Ali ) :When you pay a visit to Yemen , the first things you’ll notice is that nearly every man carries a knife ( dagger ) in fact, that is strapped to his waist, just over his bellybutton.

The dagger is called a jambiya (

JAM-bee-yah) and was a part of the traditional Yemeni dress long before Islam came to Yemen . Historically, a man’s jambiya was passed down from father to son for generations. It was a weapon, a symbol of regional origin and social status, and an informal investment plan, since the daggers nearly always appreciated with time.

The real dagger is usually made of cow or giraffe bone, or the (famously endangered) black rhinoceros horn. Depending on the quality of the horn and the craftsmanship, these jambiyas can run ( cost ) between $50 and $15,000bucks , some people said that the president of Yemen, owns a jambiya worth a million bucks.

In these days , a large number of those jambiyas displayed in Yemen are actually Chinese-made imitations , which usually cost between $2 and $15 bucks .

traditions connect us with the past ,i treasure those days that as a boy was seated at the table with the elders of the family  during  a celebration. Now,most of them are gone but alive in my memories thanks to  the family gathering that were holding  a reunion  on a special day.

if we forget ours roots and traditions we are next to nothing.

I believe  that traditions have  negative and positive contribution to our living.some of them have logical bases, some are silly .
some comes from ignorances, some suit up with the wisdom  of people they lived before us.
in our community as a religion rule we fast (don’t eat or drink ) between morning and night ,we have limited time to eat and drink so we have to wake up in the midnight in the past that in that time the alarm clock had not yet invented.people used an instrument called DAVUL it seems like a drum but make unbearable terrible sound.
I think there is no need this terrible sound maker any more
