School isn’t just about learning. It also teaches us how to socialize with other people. For some, school is where lifelong passions and interests begin.

In the US, most schools offer many different clubs that students can participate in outside of the classroom. For instance, drama club is where students with an interest in acting can practice their acting skills. A ski club might might raise money so its members can take a trip to the slopes. Hear Jason and Amy talk about what clubs they belonged to in high school.

Jason:  I was going through my yearbook recently, and I forgot how many clubs I was in.

Amy:  Really?

Jason:  Yeah!

Amy:  Let me guess, Drama Club?

Jason:  Yup, Drama Club, couple sports teams. I was in some really off-the-wall clubs like Irish Society, a couple music groups, you know.

Amy:  My school had so many clubs, and I wasn’t in a single one of them.

Jason:  Really? There wasn’t one thing that interested you that you wanted to do?

Amy:  I guess I just felt like I would do it on my own. Like, why did I have to join a club to be proud of my Swedish heritage, or whatever?

Jason:  Sure. I went skiing, you know, but I also went with the Ski Club. It’s just kind of a good way to socialize.

Amy:  That’s true. You get to maybe meet some of your peers who you wouldn’t otherwise hang out with. But I feel like in high school, most people’s friend groups are pretty narrow. So do you actually expand your group of friends by joining clubs, or do you just join clubs with all your friends?

Jason:  I think you just expand your realm of experience with your friends. Like maybe all 10 of you wouldn’t be able to get it together to go skiing on your own, but when you have a faculty member helping this extracurricular activity along, then things get done that wouldn’t otherwise happen.

Amy:  That’s true. I never went skiing in high school, so maybe I should have joined some clubs.

Discussion

Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Jason was recently reflecting on how many clubs he was in in high school. From Drama Club to the Irish Society, he really participated in many extracurricular activities.

Amy, on the other hand, did not join any clubs in high school, even though many were available. She preferred to pursue activities on her own. And she wonders whether clubs really allow participants to meet new people, or whether they just reinforce groups of friends that already exist.

Jason thinks that he mostly hung out with friends he already knew in his clubs, but it was still worth it, because he got to participate in cool activities, like skiing.

Do you like to join clubs? If so, which ones? If not, why not?

Joining to a club is good way to have  new friends,to learn sometings new.E-baby is a unique club which I participated. But in the real life,I don’t like to do somethings with new friends.I feel better with my old friends.I want to have new friends.I meet with new people,we talk,we eat, drink together;but after that this relation doesn’t go further. There is a limit to be friend and best friend. That’s like the river.Difficult to pass it.But I think we have to continue to search for having new best friends. It’s not easy to have best friends. But we have to try always. And for that the clubs are a good way to find them.

I’m very interested in joining clubs, cause I think club is a place where you can meet people who have the same hobbies with you. We can learn how to socialize with other people and make friends in the club. Besides the activities of the club enrich our life in spare time and sure you can get lots of fun. Each club has some leaders. Being the leaders of the club is a good way to develop your leading abilities.

So I do like joining clubs. Now I’ve graduated. If I had a chance, I’d like to join a tennis club, an English club and a Hulusi( a traditional Chinese musical instrument of Yunnan province) club. Cause I like playing tennis though I’m not good at it. It’s cool and very intereting and exercising is good for my health. As to the English club, I think it’s a good way to improve my English level and a great place to exchange ideas with more people. The last one, Hulusi, it’s really amazing. The sound is so beautiful and soft. Playing it after work is a good way to relax. If I can join a Hulusi club, I can learn and improve my level.

To sum up, joining club is a good way to enrich one’s sparetime, learn more and make more friends.

if you have a very rare car and all of a sudden you meet a person who’s got the same model. You hang around together, going to the car shows, having fun. All neibourhood think you’re twins, I mean the cars. And then the third person is found with the same car. And you like – Wow, welcome, into the club, man. The antique car lovers club.

I agree English Baby is a good club for learning real English.

When I was a schoolgirl I participated in many extracurricular activities. They were vocal classes and dance classes and I really liked them. I found new friends which shared my interests. I spent my free time appearing on stage and got a real positive feelings from it.

When I was a schoolgirl, I adored participating in different  kinds of clubs. The most favourable for me were Musical , Biological, Sport and  Fancywork clubs. I learned a lot  there and still remember my instructors and friends who shared our hobbies.

I have always loved studying, therefore I am here, on English, baby. I agree with Lesya as for considering  this wonderful site as a club. It’s the right place for not only improving our knowledge in  English, but also for communicating with people who are giving us their special lessons: good or bad. You can choose whatever you prefer.:)

I would advice you not to  forget that the main purpose of Ebaby is studying.
