Keeping a journal, or diary, can be a great way to document your life. Many people use a journal as a place to write down their feelings, adventures, or just their daily lives.

It can be especially rewarding to come across a journal that you kept when you were younger. Suddenly, all these memories that you might have otherwise forgotten are there for you on the page. In a way, with a journal, you can have the opportunity to live through those experiences again. Hear Marni and Devan discuss what it’s like to keep a journal.

Marni:  I was recently packing up my parents’ house, and I came across all my old journals from high school.

Devan:  Did you used to write in one every day?

Marni:  I did! It was so amazing going back and reading it. It made me so nostalgic. It was just this written record of my life.

Devan:  That’s such an amazing thing to have, to be able to look back and reflect on your old self and who you were at that time. I never kept a journal, so I can only go from memory. But you have it all documented. That’s so cool.

Marni:  I think so, too. And there’s something about having it written down. It’s just this record of your life, and this progression from who you were and where you are now. I still like to journal. I don’t do it every day like I did in high school, but I still like to keep a record of my life and reflect on things I’ve done and things I’d like to change.

Devan:  Were there things in there that you’d completely forgotten about?

Marni:  Oh, yes. And some things that I’d like to forget about.

Devan:  I keep a blog now. It’s kind of nice to have an online journal.

Marni:  Absolutely!

Devan:  Because then you can choose to share it with your family and friends if you want to as well, which makes it a little different from a diary. But it’s a good way to keep everyone informed on what’s going on in my life on a daily basis.

Marni:  That’s true. I guess blogging’s sort of the new journaling.

Discussion

Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Marni was packing up some items at her parents’ house, and found some amazing documents: the journals that she kept in high school. She used to record everything that she did and thought about. Finding the journals now allowed her to reflect on who she was when she was younger, and who she is now. She still keeps a journal today, too, though she doesn’t write in it as often.

Devan thinks that keeping a journal is a great resource. She never kept a journal, so she must rely on her memory of what happened when she was younger. She does, however, keep a blog. The blog has some similarities to a journal, like the fact that it’s a record of her daily life, but it’s something she can easily share with her friends and family.

Marni agrees that blogs might be the journals of today.

Do you keep a journal, or did you when you were younger? What do you write in your journal? How about a blog? Do you think journals or blogs are better for recording your memories and experiences?

I absolutely agree with Irene – a secret is a secret, I’m an introvert and there’s no need for me to open my inner thoughts and feelings to smb even to diary.
Besides I’d prefer to look in the future then remember what has past.

I used to keep one in high scool, as it was the best part of my life!! I used to write in it everything that happened in school (I didn’t write about the weekends, cause they’re mostly the same and nothing interesting happens on them XD). I think it’s great to keep one, I used to write in it in English, so now I can see how it improved. It’s actually one of the ways to improve your English skills, you learn new words and it seems like you’re talking to someone and telling them what actually happened to you during the day, in English!! so yeah, it’s like you’re practising speaking AND writing.

I have never had a journal . When I was younger , I sometimes tried to do it  then I thought that it was a bad idea. Because one day someone could find  it and  understand about my  life more and more… I think everyone remembers all things of his life . According to me,  to have a journal means that you want to share your feelings and problems with someone or you hope in the future someone find your secret book.

I kept a journal when I was younger. I found it recently, and it was so interestingly to read it.

I started keeping a journal in English two weeks ago. It helps me to improve my English and to learn to express my thoughts. I think it’s great!

I’ve never had a jounal and like Devan I go from my memory, because the best days and things are  documented and solidely recorded in my memory. I can remember and also tell about them just as if it were yesterday.

I took notes of actions during a long cycle trip I ‘ve done 20 years ago and nowadays it’s really nice to read and remember.

But I never kept a journal about my childhood. I had a good childhood – perhaps a journal would destroy these feeling? ..haha :)

Many schoolgirls in my school time years used to keep a diary. They carefully described everything that happened during the day. They shared with diary the most secretive dreams and feelings. They decorated the pages of the diary with pictures, photos and stickers.

They kept the diary in the secretive place, away from parents and the closest friends.

Their diary was locked with small and very attractive lock. The key of the lock has been hidden carefully as well.

There were lots of children that went through “diary fashion” . Some boys used to keep a diary too.

As for me, I several times tried to write down the current events of my childish life, but all in vain. When I looked back to the pages I wrote they were not interesting and not worth-while to keep for long term. So, I gave up with that fashion idea throwing away the diary into the trash.

I kept a small worksheet instead where I used to write my own poems and prose. It was easier and much interesting  to describe my events or deep feelings with poems or prose. I used to add the elements of fiction to make my writings nicer.

Majority  of modern teenagers still like an idea to keep a diary. They find it relaxing to sit at the desk, take a pen and start to formulate their thoughts on paper.

Electronic diary (blog) is a wonderful invention but there is still some ancient magic in “live” diary with tangible, well-decorated pages. ;)

I think blogs are better place for recording any memories and experiences. The blog can be decorated in the most sophisticated way you like.  Widgets, links, video and audio, photos, articles   help to make a blog  an unique place where you can not only entertain yourself but also your close friends or relatives.

I’m fond of blogging. I keep blogs in English and in Russian. I have wrote up the stuff  from my shabby worksheet to the blog. I have translated some Russian stuff into English on purpose to improve my skills of the writing in English.

I enjoy bloggin even if nobody allowed to see what I wrote there ;) I like loneliness in the blogging. I don’t collect followers or comments. I write for myself : )

I have never kept a journal.

When I was a girl, I had some secrets as others, but I would have never wanted my parents or somebody else could read them.

If I had kert a journal, I would have definitely to hide it from everybody. And if anybody had read my journal, all my secrets would have been general knowledge. I don’t think it’s a good idea. So, I would never wanted to let the cat out of the bag.

A secret is a secret!
