When looking for a job, people usually send resumes to companies. It’s a good idea to follow-up with the company by calling them. Making sure they received the resume is a nice excuse to call and ask some questions.
In this conversation Debbie calls Steve to talk about the job she wants. Her goal is to let Steve know how much she wants the job and to get some information from him. Take a listen!

Steve

Debbie

Steve:   Hi, this is Steve.

Debbie:   Hi, Steve. This is Debbie Martin. I sent you a resume last week. I just wanted to call and make sure that you got that.

Steve:   Oh, ok. Let me check. I got a lot of them.

Debbie:   Oh, really?

Steve:   Yeah.

Debbie:   That must be pretty overwhelming.

Steve:   Uh, Debbie Martin. Yeah, it’s right here.

Debbie:   Oh, great.

Steve:   What can I do for you?

Debbie:   Well, actually, I was very much interested in knowing if you were going to be calling me back for an interview because I’m really interested in the job, and I just wanted to call and make sure that you got the resume and let you know how interested I am.

Steve:   Well, I got about a hundred of these things over the past couple weeks and I’m trying my best to get through them. I was planning on making calls next week, around Tuesday or Wednesday.

Debbie:   Ok.

Steve:   Does that work for you?

Debbie:   Yeah, that definitely works. Do you mind if I ask you a couple of questions now that we’re on the phone though?

Steve:   I just got a minute, but, shoot.

Debbie:   Basically, I’m really curious to know what qualities you’re looking for in an employee.

Steve:   Um, somebody that has some experience with, uh, a little bit of phone sales but primarily outside sales.

Debbie:   Ok.

Steve. Where’s your experience?

Debbie:   Um, actually, I’ve done primarily outside sales. But I have done some work on the phone.

Steve:   So you’d be willing to travel 20, 30% of the time?

Debbie:   Oh, sure. Yeah, that’s no problem. I enjoy that.

Steve:   Ok. Um, that’s about it. So how about I give you a call next week if it looks good?

Debbie:   Wonderful. Thanks so much for your time, Steve.

Steve:   Thanks for calling.

Debbie:   Uh-huh.

Steve:   Bye-bye.

Debbie:   Bye.

Discussion

Debbie does a good job of getting information from Steve. She got a good idea of how many people Steve might be interviewing. She also got some information about the job. And Steve will now remember her name when he starts reviewing resumes.
Remember, there are usually many people applying for a job. You should do anything you can to make yourself stand out and seem different. Making a few calls will definitely help.
Good luck with the job search, and see you next week!
Your American Friend,
John

Acually, the differences between the two seem slight. Both consist of a structured list of facts that allows you to impart relevant information about your skills and achievements to an employer as quickly and simply as possible.

Although in essence they both serve the same purpose, the main difference between a CV and a resume is that a CV acts as a complete record of your professional history, while a resume is a short, targeted list of transferable skills and accomplishments, intended to show how you can be of specific benefit to the particular company to which you are applying.
