Go Super to Listen Go Super!

The word “shot” has a number of meanings. You can take a shot with a gun, or a bow and arrow. Photographers or filmmakers are also sometimes said to “shoot film,” or try to get a “good shot” of their subject. A shot is also a name for a small glass of hard alcohol.

When people say, “I’ll give it a shot,” though, they simply mean that they’re going to try something out. In this case, a shot is just a try. The person may not be that confident in his or her ability to do the activity, but he or she will try it out and see what happens.

This is how singer Adam Levine felt when he was asked to act in the TV series American Horror Story. He was a singer, not an actor, but he thought he might as well try. He would check it out and see what happened. He decided to give it a shot.

Can you think of a time when you’ve decided to just give something a shot?

Success or anything innovative and rewarding stems from trying. So I think we might be short-changing ourselves, by not giving shots… just saying : )

Great debates on today’s lesson! : ) I couldn’t agree more with you Bellaboo, trying is daring … and even if daring might lead to failure that should not convince us that something isn’t achievable.  Failure is a form of impediment between us and an objective we’re pursuing, it is not essentially a blockade. It’s merely something that calls for a revision in whichever plan we were undertaking, and if we give it another shot we might see it through. Sometimes all we need is a different approach, another shot ;) But of course, we owe it to ourselves to make decisions that keep us from trouble, so try confidently but rationally.

Julito, your story reminded of that time I was trying to do a parallel park.  I was behind the wheels with my housemate on the passenger seat and his friend who was also learning how to drive occupied the back seat.  My housemate had set up parking cones that I had to park in between, and for hours these cones had to endure the pain of being run over, and he had to listen to me telling him that I can’t park. So my housemate grew furious, he claimed that I was wasting his time and gas, he stepped out of the car and urged his friend to follow him outside.  From inside the car I watched them as they were picking up the cones and stored them in the trunk, and I thought that was the last parking lesson he’d ever teach me. Well it was ;).  I observed that he and his friend were positioning themselves as “human parking cones”… I knew what was coming and began to panic ;). “You know what you got to do, Snoopy, you only get one shot at this!” I heard he say, “just picture me as an expensive Royce roll and my friend here , as a Mercedes, but should you happen to run us over,  that’s no problem, we’re not real cars” ;).

I tried and although it took me nearly half an hour, I managed to park safely in between them. Today they owe their lives to me, and I earned my drivers license because of them ;).

Thank you Lesya, four your nice words. My brother encouraged me to face my fear of water. You have encouraged me to face my other fears.

I have a question. There is another slang “have a shot” This slang also means “to try” but is it completely same ” give it a shot” ?

BELLA ,  many  times life doesn´t accept a no for an answer…  I was doing the military service  and practicing with war ammunitions and deadly hand-granades , the sarge in charge of the platoon  ordered me to be the first soldier  to  throw the granade, WOW, I didn´t have time  to think twice…do or die in the intent…. I must have given a super shot , so afraid I was of letting  the granade slipped out of my hand and drop   a feet away from me.    LOL…...

my life is full of shots, i always tried to give a shot at some iffy situations too and i get ahead most of the time. luckly i have a strong innerself who always impels me to dare. we have to discard the timidity from our lives and you are not a timid one i’m sure. i remember many situations which were hard and complicated enough to give a shot but i do and there were some funny too to make an attempt. some sucessfull shots were proven failed later and some missed shots were funny enough to laugh afterwards. its sad and funny at the same time you never know what ll happen but to give it a shot is good rather not.

julito i’m talking to you.

Dear Lesya,  your humour is one of a kind. You hit the nail on the head, I would be totally  unafraid  should I  had a tractor  to  drive around the city , either in Belarus or Buenos Aires. :)))

Listen to me, when you will be on your way to Belarus  we will try “to ride” a tractor along the widest field in the countryside and you will understand that the fear is completely defeated ;)

In my childhood I had a very bad experience with water. I would have been drowned if my family couldn’t arrive on time. For a long time I stayed away from water but my brother encouraged me to swim. I decided to give it a shot and swimming is my favourite sport now.

When i read the title of this subject I thought ,this is an easy one , but digging deeper in my  mind,is not quite so. i am the kind of person that likes to walk  the beaten path,so  when something new comes up   there is always the fear  if I  would be able  to succeed or  not, and fear  is the worst enemy  in dealing with new  situations in our life. An example, when I was younger I wanted to learn to drive , so I decided  to give it a shot , unluckily, i crushed the car in my first lesson, I couldn´t  overcome my fear,    put me out of the streets  and the possibility  to own a car, and over the years  i have had many . If you ask me , I am still not ready to give it a shot  and I don´t think that I will ever be :))))))))

I’ll give it a shot means I’m gonna try it out. For example, when I was young, I was not good at riding bicycle. Once, I did try it! I gave it a shot, and I managed to ride the bicylce by time. =)

”.....so I cross my heart, and I hope to die

That I’ll only stay with you one more night

And I know I’ve sad it a milion times

But I’ll only stay with you one more night…”

 Maroon 5, “One more night”

Each morning starts from this song on my alarm clock :) I’m not in the Groundhog Day.;) It is not a routine – just a nice melody and good singer.  Adam Levine is a perfect example  to understand better the meaning of “give it a  shot”

Our beautiful life requires us to give it a shot every time.

Since the very day I remember myself the phrase ” give it a shot” accompanies me.  I can’t quicky determine the most tricky situation when I should give it a shot because I have a feeling that I’m constantly living with  “give it a shot” phrase which is tattooed on my brain :)
