On April 22, almost 200 countries around the world celebrate Earth Day. On this day, people show their support for protecting the environment and the earth’s resources. People hold demonstrations, create festivals, and celebrate the earth while educating the public about environmental issues.

But are you shortchanging the earth when you only give it one day? Rather than dedicating one day to celebrating the earth, would it be better to have an earth month, or even to make a vow to support the earth every day? Find out what Mason and Lily think in this environment English lesson.

Lily:  When did Earth Day start?

Mason:  You know, I looked it up.

Lily:  OK.

Mason:  And it started in 1970.

Lily:  But do you really need a day to plant a tree?

Mason:  There are so many days. Every day is dedicated to at least five things. So, you know, maybe if it was Earth Month? We might need to take it to that level in order to actually effect something.

Lily:  Of course, you could even take it farther than that and make it an Earth Era, if you wanted to go that route.

Mason:  Sure.

Lily:  And make people really aware of it.

Mason:  Let’s take a step back. We probably don’t have the right historical context.

Lily:  OK.

Mason:  1970, it’s been over 40 years that people have been talking about environmental awareness and stuff. So we probably take it way more for granted than people in 1970 did that you actually need to start talking about sustainability and recycling and pollution and stuff like that. I don’t know if there are any official Earth Day traditions.

Lily:  Well yeah. I think at least what I always visualize whenever I think of Earth Day, because I grew up in a college town that was kind of hippie-ish, is they always have this celebration where they would plant a tree and it would be really exciting. It would be wonderful. And then there would be new trees all over the place. And people would dance in circles and sing about the earth.

Discussion

Lily and Mason are interested in the origins of Earth Day, but they don’t know if it’s an important holiday. It might not be that effective to just have a day dedicated to celebrating the earth. Should the focus on the planet be longer than just a day?

Mason points out that when Earth Day started not that many people knew about environmental awareness. It’s important to have historical context. And Lily shares that Earth Day was a celebration in a town where she grew up. There were demonstrations, and people planted trees and sang songs.

Is Earth Day celebrated in your country? Do you think it’s an important holiday? Do you think holidays should be created to celebrate every occasion?

I don’t know the exact of histoical context of earth day.

mayb it must started with people who are aware of the importance of the earh. it made people take it to the level where people can raise awareness of the earth.

i think it is shortchanging for the earth , cause the earth’s resources and sustainability  are reaching to the limit right now.

everyday, we are taking it way more for granted to use and develop those resources .

The earth day isn’t very common in Iran, it’s just a name in calendar, but we have another day for planting trees instead, “Arbor day”; it’s held on half of the last month of a year, on 15th Sfand (or 5th march). That’s interesting for me when referred to Wikipedia and saw this day has a different times for each country depending on climate.

I think the environment is alive; mother’s nature has created it such a safe, comfortable and wonderful beautiful place for all creatures, especially humankind, who have a particular share of it, and should try their best to love it and protect it.

One important thing I learnt in my life is:” If you care about where you live, by planting a tree or cleaning the environment, you make the earth happy!! Believe it! the earth will compensate in return, repays your kindness and makes you happy twice or much more!!” Never forget renovating and repairing is a lot harder than conserving, so let’s preserve our planet,  Dear Mother Earth :)

The Earth Day is celebrated in my country in recent years. But people still don’t aware of protecting Environment. I think that reason is the people is not taught about it. They don’t know the harm of it.  So, i think that we should give the awareness to children and motivate movement people to build a beautiful Earth together.

we people use to celebrate the day but its not a holiday over here. i think its not necessary to make the earth day a holiday because a single day is not enough to get the outcome for the whole year. there should be regular source of awareness in schools and institutes. our media can help alot in this by onairing different programms and doumentries on hot topics related to enviormental issues. we human beings are the ruling on earth so its our responsibility to save it at any cost.

Let’s celebrate the Earth Day by being mudders for just one day or two :) planting  trees, traversing nature picking up the longerst hikes and saying thank you for such a great great gift as our resilient, kind, generous, unique, (no other planet like that in the whole universe!!!) patient and sometimes very unpredictable Mother Earth!
