It’s important to show your mom that you love her every day, but Mother’s Day is particularly important. In the US, Mother’s Day occurs on the second Sunday in May. On this holiday, you may express your feelings to your mom by making her a card, or giving her flowers, or taking her out to brunch. Or maybe she’d prefer breakfast in bed!

When a woman becomes a mother, Mother’s Day changes. In addition to celebrating her mom, her children and loved ones begin to celebrate her. Find out how Marni feels about her first Mother’s Day as a mom in this holiday English lesson.

Mason:  So, Marni, are you excited for your first Mother’s Day?

Marni:  You know, I hadn’t even thought about it, but you’re absolutely right! I officially get to celebrate this holiday because I am officially a mother.

Mason:  What’s it like when all of a sudden there’s this holiday you’ve been participating in your whole life from one side, and now you’re in the club?

Marni:  It has new meaning, it’s true. I don’t know. I guess I’m kind of excited. I never thought about it, because what I love about Mother’s Day is going out to brunch and giving my mom flowers, so I guess now I can be the recipient of all those things.

Mason:  You absolutely can. Why is it that brunch is such a Mother’s Day thing?

Marni:  I don’t know. It’s fun to go out, and you get to spend time with someone over a meal, and just chat. You’re right, it is just kind of synonymous with Mother’s Day. I like it.

Mason:  You don’t think it’s just because the powers-that-be wanted to ensure that mom was still gonna cook dinner? We can’t let her off the hook from that?

Marni:  Ah, that’s true. But I’m not gonna cook dinner, so I’d better have meals made for me all day.

Mason realizes that a big event is coming up in Marni’s life: she’s about to celebrate her first Mother’s Day as a mother herself. She is now “in the club” of mothers. She realizes that she can now enjoy all the benefits of motherhood that she has given to her own mother in the past.

Mason wonders why Mother’s Day brunch is such a popular tradition. It might just be because it’s nice to share a meal with your mother. Mason wonders, too, if it might come from an expectation that a mother should cook dinner, even on her holiday. Marni doesn’t care about that expectation. She doesn’t want to cook any meals for herself on Mother’s Day.

Is Mother’s Day celebrated in your country? What do you do to celebrate your mother? If you are a mother, how do you like your family to show you their appreciation?

Being mother is not a job, it is very enjoyble thing by nature for the women to grow her kids on proper way. it is hard job we will never see a woman have more than on kid :), but in reality there is women have more than 10 kids. Mothers dont need a speacial day in order to be celebrated, every day is mother day, I do beleive that the highly important person in our life is our mothers. May God bless all mothers around the world.

In Korea, we had mother’s day 2 days ago. But we called it parent’s day. So we celebrate not only mother but father. Actually I only gave them cards because I had the test, so I didn’t have time to plan for an event. I was so sorry about that but also very appreciate to my parent’s because they loved only for it. I think that I have to prepare an event because my parent’s wedding anniversary is just around the corner so I will compensate for the parent’s day.

yeah, i totally agree with khenifra, being a mother is very difficult work, may be the most difficult in the world, i’ve not been mother yet but experienced it a bit for 2 or 3 weeks :D, when you become a mother, you should prepare yourself to do everything for the child, be patientt more than before, manage your time very well, be happy and sad at the same time and many incridible other things. Happy mother’s day to all powerful women all around the world.

The Mother’s day doesn’t directly celebrated in my origine country. All day in the year are supposed to be a Mother’s day. The job as mother is most difficult job in the world. Just to to think about the fact that we were 9 month in the mother’s belly …... is one of the reason why all days should be a Mother’s day. In Islam we say the paradise is under the power of the mom’s.

The appeal is, please give a part of the love and adoration back to your mother at least on the Mother’ day :-)
