Celebrating birthdays is a popular tradition in the U.S. Birthdays are most popular with children, but adults like to have fun too.
Last week my friend Greg had his birthday. His wife Deena wanted to have a surprise party for him. I helped her plan it via email.
Read below to see some of our emails planning the party.

Dialog

1. Study - Read the dialog again to see how the vocab words are used.

Note

Note:   The “Kennedy School” is a restaurant.

Email from John:
How many people are slated to show up tomorrow?
Email from Deena:
I am at 20 now. Greg thinks that we are going to dinner tomorrow. Maybe when we meet up you guys can say you don’t feel like Thai food and then we can suggest Kennedy School. I can tell Greg that we are going out with our other friends on Sat. night and one of them has never tried Thai food (real conversation that he heard me have). Tell me what you think.
Email from John:
I don’t think I should say I don’t like Thai. How about you come up with a reason to go to Kennedy and I’ll be like, YEAH!, Kennedy School.
Email from Deena:
I can tell Greg that we are going to Thai food with friends on Sat. so let’s go somewhere else. I can say – lets go to a pub or something. Then you can say – how about a McMenamins and then I can say – yeah, Kennedy School – what fun!
Email from John:
Okay. You should probably swing by the office then. What time should we expect you?

Discussion

These emails may be a little difficult to understand. However, they are very real, which makes them good material to study.
Deena is very excited to plan a party for Greg. She can’t wait to see the look on his face when he arrives at the restaurant and sees all his friends! I can’t wait either, and I’m happy to help her plan the party.
I hope your next birthday is fun. Maybe you’ll even have a surprise party!
Your American Friend,
John
