It’s easy to make goals, but it can be very difficult to reach them. It can be something small like remembering to make your bed every morning. Or it may be something that takes a lot of effort, like exercising more.
No matter what your goals are, it will take commitment to stick to it. It’s like being at the bottom of a big hill and slowly walking your way to the top, step by step. It may be difficult, and you will get tired, but you’ve committed to getting there.
Gary has given himself a deadline to reach a goal. Find out more in today’s English lesson about commitment.

Gary: I made a decision today.
Lily: Oh, yeah?
Gary: Which is really exciting, I think.
Lily: What?
Gary: I weighed all the pros and cons. And I thought it through. I have made the decision to stick out my job for at least another six months.
Lily: But you hate that job!
Gary: I do. But there are some really good things happening. And I’m just going to roll with the punches for six months.
Lily: If I were you, I would be gone. I don’t like being tied down by things like that. Because especially if it’s something that you hate, is it really worth it?
Gary: But I do see some great opportunities to learn some things. And you know what? I made up my mind, so I kind of feel comfortable with it now.
Lily: But think of all the exciting unknowns out there. Everything you could be doing instead of that drudgery that you’re enduring for six more months.
Gary: I feel like I’m more excited now because I know it’s only six more months. Maybe something else will happen. But I’ve got a countdown. So I feel like committing to it has actually helped me.
Lily: Nice. That’s a really good way to look at it.

Gary is excited that he’s made a big decision about his job. He has weighed all the pros and cons of his work and has committed to stay for six more months. Lily thinks this is a bad idea. She feels that Gary should quit his job now and stop enduring something that he doesn’t like.
But Gary doesn’t see it as a drudgery. He thinks there may be other opportunities that can come from it. And he says that the countdown to leaving his job makes him feel better.
Do you commit to your decisions, or do you often change your mind?
